I ATTRIBUTE THAT TO OUR MECHANISMS WE ARE UTILIZING TO AVOID THE COVID VIRUS, THEN A FITTING US, PREVENTING OTHER ILLNESSES, WHICH ARE MOSTLY VIRUSES THAT ATTACK US.
I THINK PEOPLE HAVE BECOME MORE AWARE OF HOW VIRUSES ARE SPREAD THROUGH RESPIRATORY DROPS.
I ALWAYS SAY THESE ARE LIKE SPOONS AND SHOVELS, OK, THAT DELIVER US THE GERMS, AND REALLY , THERE ARE ONLY A FEW PLACES GERMS CAN GET INTO YOUR BODY, OK?
THE NOSE, THE MOUTH, OR THE EYES.
I WILL TELL YOU, IF WE WERE PRACTICING THESE THINGS BEFORE THE PANDEMIC, WE WOULD HAVE LESS COLDS, USING LESS ANTIBIOTICS, LESS DOWNTIME, MORE QUALITY IN OUR LIVES.
UNFORTUNATELY, IT TOOK THE PANDEMIC TO BRING THAT ACROSS.
MOVING FORWARD, I THINK MAYBE WE WILL BE MORE CAUTIOUS HIM AND MAYBE WE WILL HAVE LESS OF -- MORE CAUTIOUS, AND MAYBE WE WILL HAVE LESS OF THESE COLDS, WORK OUR WAYS BACK INTO OUR SOCIAL LIVES AND FIND COME YOU KNOW, -- FIND, YOU KNOW, THAT COLDS AND VIRUSES WILL ONCE AGAIN BE A PART OF IT.

WE HAVE STUDENTS FROM DIFFERENT WALKS OF LIFE, INDIVIDUALS REENTERING SOCIETY FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS, ADULTS WHO MAY HAVE LEARNING DISABILITIES.
WE REALLY HAVE A VARIETY OF STUDENTS WHO COME, BECAUSE THEY WANT TO PURSUE THEIR PASSION.
SHIRLEY: STUDENTS WILL ALSO RECEIVE JOB PLACEMENT HELP, UNIFORM, TEXTBOOK, CHEFS KNIFE, AND TRANSPORTATION TO AND FROM CLASS.

RECENTLY, SHE REFUSED TO GIVE UP HER BUS SEAT TO A WHITE MAN IN JIM CROW SOUTH, PIVOTAL ROLE THAT HELP SHAPE AMERICAN LIFE AS WE KNOW IT, BUT THERE WAS A SIMILAR SITUATION PRIOR, WERE BLACK MEN WERE ON THE FRONT LINES, AND ONE OF THESE WOMEN WAS CAROLINE.
SHE WAS A PROMINENT FIGURE IN A BLACK COMMUNITY.
SHE WAS AN EDUCATOR AND ACTIVIST, AND AROUND THIS TIME, BLACK PEOPLE WERE NOT ALLOWED TO RIDE STREETCARS, PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION, AND COULD RESULT IN A PHYSICAL ASSAULT FROM THE CONDUCTOR.
THE ACCOUNT WAS ONE ACTIVIST WHO GOT ON THE STREETCAR AND RISK HARM TO STAND AGAINST RACIST POLICY.
SHE WASN'’’T THE ONLY ONE WHO CONTRIBUTED TO THE STORY, AND THE FIGHT EVENTUALLY ENDED SEGREGATION.

>> PEOPLE HAVE MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT HOW THE GUN VIOLENCE OCCURS.
THERE ARE MANY INSTANCES OF MISTAKEN IDENTITY AND ARGUMENTS THAT GO WRONG, A LOT OF ACCIDENTAL SHOOTINGS.
I HAD AN IDEA TO MAKE PORTRAITS OF VICTIMS OF GUN VIOLENCE, WHERE THE ARTIST WOULD MEET WITH THE FAMILY AND CREATE A PORTRAIT IN THEIR OWN STYLE AND INTERPRETATION OF THAT PERSON'’’S LIFE.
IT IS ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL THE FAMILY MEMBER FEELS WE CAN LISTEN TO THE STORY OF THE LIFE OF THEIR LOVED ONES AND WHAT THEY MEANT TO THE PEOPLE AROUND THEM.
THE FOCUS IS ON THE PERSON AND HOW THEY LIVED.
I THINK IT IS REALLY BASED ON WHAT THE ARTIST IS BRINGING TO IT, AND WHAT THEY ARE GETTING FROM THE FAMILY.
>> THE MISSION OF THIS PROJECT IS TO GET PEOPLE TO PAY ATTENTION TO THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE LOST TO GUN VIOLENCE EVERY DAY.
THE OTHER AFFECT IS TO BRING -- THE OTHER AFFECT WE HAVE IS TO BRING SOLACE TO THE FAMILIES.
>> MY SON WAS VERY LOVING.
HE ALWAYS JUST WANTED FAMILY.
WHEN THEY DID TELL ME, THERE WAS NOTHING ELSE THEY COULD DO FOR HIM, I LET THEM KNOW HE WAS AN ORGAN DONOR.
SHE ACTUALLY LISTEN TO ME, TURNING MY PAIN INTO A PURPOSE.
>> I HEARD ABOUT THE PROJECT THROUGH A GROUP, WHO TOLD ME WHAT THE PROJECT WAS ABOUT, TO GIVE LIFE TO OUR LOVED ONES LOST THROUGH THESE PAINTINGS.
WHEN HE WAS YOUNGER, HE WOULD NEVER SMILE.
AFTER THE NOTICE THAT HE WAS GOING TO BE A FATHER, FROM THAT DAY ON, HE JUST SMILED ALL THE TIME.
HE SAID HE WANTED TO BE THE KIND OF FATHER THAT HIS FATHER WAS TO HIM.
I WAS AFRAID OF THE PORTRAIT.
I KEPT SAYING THAT IS NOT MY SON.

I WAITED TO LOOK AT IT ON AND HE WAS SURROUNDED BY HIS FAMILY.
HE WAS SURROUNDED BY PEOPLE THAT HE LOVED.
THAT PORTRAIT MADE ME ACCEPT THE FACT THAT MY SON WAS NOT COMING BACK, AND I LOVE IT.
I LOVE THAT PORTRAIT.
THAT IS SOMETHING HE ALWAYS TALKED ABOUT, HE ALWAYS WANTED TO BE AROUND HIS FAMILY.
>> WHENEVER SHE SEES THIS IMAGE OF HIM, IT BRINGS HIM TO LIFE.
>> I FEEL HONORED TO PROVIDE A PORTRAIT AND TO PORTRAY THEIR STORY.
MY EXPERIENCE IS THESE MOMS ARE STRONG WOMEN WHO HAVE DONE EVERYTHING RIGHT RAISING THEIR KIDS, AND THE EXISTENCE OF GUNS EVERYWHERE, IT IS AN INJUSTICE.
THIS PROJECT IS INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT TO ME BECAUSE I AM NOT A MARCHER, AND ACTIVIST, BUT I AM AN ARTIST, AND I AM OUTRAGED BY GUN VIOLENCE, AND THIS IS SOMETHING I CAN DO, AND EVERY ARTIST THAT WORKS WITH US IS EQUALLY PASSIONATE ABOUT THIS.
♪ REGINA: THE PROJECT CONTINUES TO BRING AWARENESS TO ISSUES OF GUN VIOLENCE.

I HAVE MY GRAPE TOMATOES AND FETA, SO LET'’’S GET STARTED.
HE PUT THE TOMATOES INTO A LARGE BAKING DISH.
I -- WE START BY PUTTING THE TOMATOES INTO LARGE BAKING DISH.
I LOVE GARLIC.
THEN, EIGHT OUNCES OF FETA.
LIBERALLY DRIZZLE OLIVE OIL OVER EVERYTHING AND SEASON WITH SALT AND PEPPER.
I LIKE PEPPER.

PUT IT IN A 400-DEGREE OVEN FOR 35 MINUTES.
WHILE THE TO MEADOWS -- THE TOMATOES AND FETA ARE BAKING, BOIL YOUR PASTA.
NOW WE WILL TAKE IT OUT OF THE OVEN.
♪ MASH THE TOMATOES, GARLIC, AND FETA.
THE DOCTOR IS CREAMY --FETA IS CREAMY AND ASKED LIKE A SAUCE.
NOW FOR SOME FRESH BASIL.
♪ IT HAS SUCH A STRONG FLAVOR.
I THOUGHT THE TASTE OF THE FETA WOULD OVERPOWER THE PASTA, BUT LET'’’S GIVE IT A TRY.

WE VISITED A LOCAL PHILADELPHIA CANDY STORE TO FIND OUT.

CHOCOLATE AS CANDY IS THE RESULT OF INDUSTRIALIZATION, AND IS ONLY THE LAST 200 YEARS.
♪ PRIOR TO THAT, CHOCOLATE EXISTS AS DRINKING CHOCOLATE.
INDUSTRIALIZATION BROUGHT THIS WAVE OF CHOCOLATE MAKING, MAKING A CHOCOLATE BAR THAT TASTES THE SAME, CHEAP, ACCESSIBLE.
ONE OF THE THINGS WE LOST WAS FLAVOR, HIGHLIGHTING WHAT CHOCOLATE CAN BE.

WE USE VACUUM PRESSURE TO TAKE THE HUSKS AWAY, AND THEY FALL INTO BOOKLET WHERE WE COLLECT THEM.
WE TAKE THEM AND PUT THEM IN A MACHINE.
THE MACHINE IS A GRANITE-BASED WHEEL.
OVER SEVERAL DAYS, CRUSHING IT TO A LIQUID PASTE.
♪ WE REFINE THREE DAYS TO SIX DAYS, THEN HAVE A FINISHED CHOCOLATE DOOR, AND WE HAND-FOIL , HAND-WRAP EVERY BAR.
♪ I THINK GENERALLY PEOPLE PICK UP A CHOCOLATE BAR AND SAY, CANDY, NOT A PLANT SOMEBODY GREW AND SPENT PROBABLY GENERATIONS PERFECTING.
♪ COCOA BEANS ALL TASTE DIFFERENT.
THEY HAVE THEIR OWN UNIQUE STORY, AND THE PEOPLE BEHIND THEM HAVE THEIR OWN UNIQUE STORIES, AND ONE REASON WE DO THIS IS TO HIGHLIGHT THAT.
WE WANT TO BRING PEOPLE CLOSER TO HOW THIS CHOCOLATE BAR GOT HERE.
PEOPLE OFTEN RHETORICALLY ASKED, DON'’’T YOU GET SICK OF CHOCOLATE?
