Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipwell we're coming down to the final days of the federal bribery trial against us Senator Bob Menendez and his two codefendants Wael Hana and Fred Davies the defense team for Menendez wrapped up their closing arguments earlier today taking their last shots at the allegations that Menendez engaged in corrupt Behavior saying the US justice department left holes in their case and failed to provide evidence that would prove Beyond a reasonable doubt that the senator participated in a quidd pro quo now attorney Adam fee told the jury that a victory for Menendez is a victory for the country after menendez's team finished their final arguments attorneys for codefendant will Hana and Fred Davies took their turn to offer a closing statement senior correspondent Brenda Flanigan is outside the courthouse in New York to shed more light on what the defense offered in this last chance to address the jury Brenda great to see you what were the final points that Adam fee made today on behalf of Menendez Joanna Fe kept five hours of closing arguments with an appeal to the juror's patriotism this is what he told them quote when you acquit Senator Menendez the USA wins when thin cases brought by overzealous prosecutors are rejected because the evidence isn't there that would be a win for the country and then he urged them quote resist the temptation to pick the salacious story about a corrupt politici because it's not there now fee spent the morning picking apart the prosecution's evidence arguing that their case is quote Hollow mostly circumstantial and full of gaps so let's consider the government star witness Jose urbe he claims he Bri Menendez with a mercedesbenz in return for senators influence disrupting a fraud case now fee called urbe quote a really good liar who never actually discussed those car payments with Senator Mendez Joanna so Brenda all along we've heard the defense team point back to naen Menendez did you hear any more of that today actually we did fee mentioned actions that naen took she concealed from Menendez initially hid her financial difficulties why she didn't want to tell him about these car payments from Ure rebe because she had broken up uh Menendez had broken up with naen once before over the chaos in her life with an ex-boyfriend and she didn't want him to see more evidence of instability in her life in case it would prompt another breakup now fee pointed out that if they're in the process of breaking up how are they going to be putting together a bribery scheme uh and that Bob Menendez he said never took a bribe that what he was doing was his job there was nothing unusual that he called officials that he took care of his cons constituents and he said fee um he said that this case dies here that was that was his his end quote but feed did manage to spark some objections from the prosecution he stepped outside the legal lines a few times and the judge did admonish him to be more careful Joanna so there's a couple things left we know that the other codefendants had a chance to present their final closing arguments uh what can you tell us about that that's right attorneys for code defense dance will Hana and Fred daies also made closing arguments they're insisting that the government essentially failed to prove a quidd proquo uh Hana attorney Larry lber argued that even if Hannah gave gifts which he said yes Hannah did and even if Menendez did do things on hana's behalf which he said yeah the senator did there's no evidence of corrupt intent that the government's case is pure speculation he says why does the government ask you to assume the worst he said because they lack direct evidence they have to ask you to infer the facts Joanna but we know that the government gets the last stab at this they get to go uh with a rebuttal what are you expecting there and when does the jury get this case what we expect to see tomorrow is the rebuttal from the government the judge charging the jury telling them what the law directs them to do and how to consider the evidence and then the jury goes behind closed doors for deliberations Joanna at a moment we have in all this coverage kind of felt like we'd never get to but we are very close senior correspondent Brenda Flanagan out there as always bringing us the latest analysis thank you Brenda thank you
