The federal corruption trial of U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) went into its fifth week Monday, with more testimony from the prosecution’s star witness, Jose Uribe. Uribe, who was indicted alongside Menendez, his wife Nadine and two other businessmen, first took the stand on Friday.

Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipwell the jury is now more than halfway through the federal corruption trial of Senator Bob Menendez week five started today with more testimony from the prosecution's Star witness Jose Uribe he New Jersey insurance broker who was indicted alongside Menendez his wife naiden and two other businessmen he was back on the stand after telling jurors on Friday that he purposely bribed the senior senator with her mercedesbenz in exchange for the use of his quote power and influence to stop Criminal investigations into his business associates ybe pleaded guilty to the charges and is cooperating with prosecutors senior correspondent Brenda Flanagan has been inside the Manhattan courtroom for us all day and joins us from outside with the latest Brenda this is a key witness folks have been waiting to hear from what did he have to say hey Briana well star witness Jose Ure rebe says that Senator Menendez boasted to him I saved your ass y ra the star witness for the prosecution in this case he says that he was involved he participated in the alleged bribery scheme between Senator Menendez and his then girlfriend naen yube was originally charged remember in this case and he flipped he pleaded guilty and now he's testifying for the prosecution and today he told the jury about quote unquote the deal he says that he met twice with Senator Menendez and these were meetings that were set up with naen uh it happened once in a restaurant once at their home and Jose Uribe in return bought naen a $60,000 mercedesbenz made a $15,000 down payment on it set up monthly payments and in return Jose Uribe said that he wanted Menendez to stop a state insurance fraud investigation that was getting very close to a woman he considers to be like a daughter his like family Anna pagero and and that was his his primary concern Brian so Jose Uribe made clear this was a case very important to him he was clearly willing to do whatever in order to divert it but did Menendez actually intervene well Jose Uribe says that at these meetings Menendez did not specify what precisely he was going to do he says he told Jose Uribe I'll look into it now during the second meeting at his home brought out a piece of paper for y rease and asked him to write down the names of all of the companies and the folks who are involved in in this uh fraud case so that he could look into it the very next day Menendez meets with New Jersey's former Attorney General Gerber greywall and greywall testified last week that he thought Menendez wanted to discuss a specific case Menendez said he wanted to talk about a certain case but greywall shut it down he said that that wasn't n proper um now ybe you know was looking for some kind of outcome what was going on and Menendez a couple of of weeks later got in touch with him and said that that doesn't there doesn't seem to be anything there quote in terms of the issue you asked me to look into that's when it got urbe got very emotional his voice broke in the courtroom he said my family was safe and it it sounded like he was on the verge of tears wow okay so pretty powerful stuff but how did the prosecution connect the dots did they at all to Mendez knowing about the Mercedes well that's where it gets tricky because they asked you rebate did you ever discuss paying for this car with Senator Mendez and ybe said no I did not um I never mentioned it he said he took it for granted he thought there was no way that the senator could not know that he had paid for this or that someone had paid for this car uh that he had paid for this car he you uh that naen and and Menendez car responded frequently Briana yeah and of course there's that uh Infamous text message naden sends to Bob where she says love of my life uh we are the brand new owners of a Mercedes b Brenda Flanagan for us in Manhattan Brenda, great work thank you [Music]
