Science Trek
Science Trek is a place where parents, kids, and educators can watch short, educational videos on a variety of science topics. Every Monday Science Trek releases a new video that introduces children to math, science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) career potentials in a fun, informative way.[MUSIC] JOAN CARTAN-HANSEN, HOST: There're six simple machines: the inclined plane, the pulley, the screw, the wheel and axle, the wedge, and the lever.
Let's look at the last three.
The wheel and axle is a simple machine made up of two wheels attached by a rod or an axle.
The wheel turns on the axle and moves things.
A car, a skateboard have wheels and axles.
So does a Ferris wheel.
A wedge is shaped like an inclined plane with a wide top and a sharp point.
Wedges are used to break things apart or hold things together.
Wedges are used to chop wood, hold a door open, or scrape ice.
And finally, there's the lever.
A lever is a long bar supported by a fulcrum.
You push down on one end, and the load is lifted at the other.
Move the fulcrum closer to the load and it takes less effort to move it.
A seesaw, a baseball bat, and chopsticks are levers.
The wheel and axle, the wedge, and the lever are all simple machines because they make work easier.
