GUESS I DON'T NEED THE MELT.
>> 25-YEAR-OLD NANCY MARSHA IS ONE OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE IN THE U.S.
WHO CAN SAY THIS.
>> I AM A DOCTOR RECIPIENT.
>> DACA IS AN ADMINISTRATIVE POLICY AUTHORIZED IN 2012 THAT PROTECTS NANCY AND OTHER INDIVIDUALS FROM DEPORTATION.
>> DACA REALLY IS IN A STATUS I WOULD SAY, DACA IS JUST A PROTECTION AND BECAUSE IT'S JUST A PROTECTION, THERE ISN'T A PATHWAY TO CITIZENSHIP.
>> IT MUST BE RENEWED EVERY TWO YEARS, THERE IS NOTHING PERMANENT ABOUT IT.
>> THIS IS NOT IMMUNITY, THIS IS NOT A PATH TO CITIZENSHIP, IT'S NOT A PERMANENT FIX.
>> MY DACA EXPIRES IN MAY, SO IT IS KIND OF A LITTLE HECTIC RIGHT NOW WITH EVERYTHING GOING ON.
>> WHAT'S GOING ON?
DACA WAS RESCINDED IN 2017 BUT THE PROGRAMS RESCISSION IS BEING CHALLENGED IN THE SUPREME COURT.
>> IT SEEMS LIKE OUR GOVERNMENT IS HEADED TOWARDS RESCINDING DACA COMPLETELY WHICH IS REALLY UNFORTUNATE BECAUSE IT'S GOING TO LEAVE A LOT OF KIDS NOT EVEN IN LIMBO, THEY ARE GOING TO BE ALMOST, I HATE TO USE THE WORD, IN DANGER, BUT THEY ARE REALLY GOING TO BE IN A WORSE OFF POSITION.
>> ALL ARGUMENTS WERE HEARD BY JUSTICES IN DECEMBER, DECISION COULD TAKE MONTHS.
>> SOMETIMES I THINK THE NEWS DEHUMANIZES STORIES LIKE THIS, THEY GIVE ALL THESE BIG NUMBERS AND LIKE IT'S TOUGH, BECAUSE WE HAVE TO REMEMBER THAT THESE ARE PEOPLE.
>> NANCY WAS BORN IN GUATEMALA, BUT SHE CAME TO THE U.S.
IN 2001 WITH HER SISTER AND MOTHER, SHE SAYS ON TOURIST VISAS TO MEET THEIR FATHER, WHO WAS ALREADY HERE.
>> HE HAS A WORK PERMIT, SO HE HAS A TEMPORARY WORK PERMIT THAT ALLOWS HIM TO BE HERE AND WORK, WHICH HE ALSO HAS TO RENEW EVERY TWO YEARS, SO BEFORE, WAS BACK AND FORTH GOING TO GUATEMALA, COMING HERE FOR A JOB.
>> BUT THE TOURIST VISA EVENTUALLY EXPIRED AND SHE WAS LEFT IN THE U.S.
WITHOUT LEGAL STATUS.
>> IT'S BEEN 18 YEARS, BASICALLY OUR WHOLE LIFE WE HAVE LIVED HERE.
>> REMAINING IN THE U.S.
WITHOUT LEGAL STATUS WAS NOT A DECISION SHE MADE FOR HERSELF, HER PARENTS MADE IT FOR HER.
>> I DON'T THINK THAT BECAUSE OF A CHOICE THAT MY PARENTS MADE , I GUESS I SHOULD BE JUDGED ON IT.
>> IMMIGRATION IS A HOT TOPIC IN AMERICAN POLITICS, SOME WOULD ARGUE DACA SHOULD BE RESCINDED AND NANCY, DEPORTED.
>> YOU ARE STUCK IN THE MIDDLE WHERE YOU ARE TOLD YOU DON'T BELONG HERE, BUT YOU DON'T FEEL LIKE YOU BELONG OVER THERE AS WELL, THE HOME COUNTRY, AS WELL.
>> SHE RECEIVED DACA STATUS IN HIGH SCHOOL, SHE CONTINUES TO BUILD A LIFE YEAR, SHE AND ANDREW DATED FOR YEARS AND ARE NOW NEWLYWEDS.
>> I DON'T KNOW WHERE IT IS.
>> WE SAT DOWN WITH THEM THE DAY BEFORE THANKSGIVING, THEY LIVE WITH ANDREW'S PARENTS IN READING, PENNSYLVANIA.
>> NOW THAT WE ARE MARRIED, WE COULD BE PART OF THE ADULT PAPER TABLE.
>> IS LONG SHE IS HAPPY, THEN I AM HAPPY.
>> WORKS COUNTY HAS BEEN NANCY'S HOME SINCE YOU CAME TO THE U.S., SHE IS A PRODUCT OF THE READING SCHOOL DISTRICT.
>> FAVORITE SCHOOL LUNCH?
>> THE SMILEY FACE POTATOES, YOU KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT?
THOSE WERE ALWAYS REALLY GOOD.
>> IT WASN'T THE SMILEY FACE POTATOES THAT DREW NANCY TO SCHOOL.
>> I ALWAYS WANTED TO BE A TEACHER GROWING UP, SO I KNEW SCHOOL WAS IMPORTANT.
>> DESPITE WITH A TEACHING DEGREE, SHE IS AN ELEVATED TO BE A TEACHER IN PENNSYLVANIA, ACCORDING TO THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, YOU MUST BE A UNITED STATE CITIZEN OR LEGAL PERMANENT RESIDENT HOLDING A VALID GREEN CARD TO QUALIFY FOR CERTIFICATION.
NOW, SHE IS BACK TO WORKING AT A PRESCHOOL, DAY CARE AND AS A SERVER.
DESPITE THESE CHALLENGES, NANCY HAS HOPE SHE WILL BE ABLE TO REMAIN HERE, IN PENNSYLVANIA.
SHE IS PURSUING A GREEN CARD THROUGH MARRIAGE BUT WHEN YOU ASK HER WHAT MAKES HER AMERICAN?
>> THAT I WANT TO THRIVE, I WANT TO BUILD UPON THE FOUNDATION THAT WAS GIVEN TO ME.
I WANT TO DO MORE WITH WHATEVER IS GIVEN TO ME.
