Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested outside Delaney Hall on Friday, a member of his staff confirmed to NJ Spotlight News. Baraka along with U.S. Reps. LaMonica McIver (D-10th), Rob Menendez (D-8th) and Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-12th) attempted to gain access to the immigrant detention facility in the city.

Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipa protest outside the recently opened immigration detention center in Newark Delaney Hall turned tumultuous as Mayor Raz Baraka was arrested by ICE officials two congressional representatives Bonnie Watson Coleman and Lmon Monica Macgyver locked arms around the mayor as ICE officials attempted to remove him that led to a scuffle between law enforcement and the elected officials as you can see in the video Congresswoman Watson Coleman who is 80 years old by the way was swept up in the pushing and shoving as were Macyver and Congressman Rob Mendez the mayor's office has confirmed the arrest an interim US attorney for New Jersey Alina Haba quickly took to social media accusing the mayor of trespassing and ignoring multiple warnings from Homeland Security to remove himself from the center she says that will not stand in this state that no one is above the law the protest was originally in opposition to the facility reopening with immigrants already being held inside according to the mayor without the proper authorization from the city the four elected officials attempted to gain access inside the center to observe the conditions of the facility the three congress members went inside the facility gates the mayor also went inside the gates the scene became chaotic as everyone was pushed out and shortly after ICE agents arrested the mayor [Music]
