Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipwe're continuing our series looking at each of the candidates running for governor who are participating in our gubanatorial conversations and their campaign priorities Tonight we take a look at the two city mayors in the race vying for the nomination First up Raz Baraka the three-term New York mayor who's a progressive candidate running to be the first black governor of New Jersey Senior correspondent Brenda Flanigan has more on the policies he's promising to champion in Trenton We're going to be out here tomorrow and the day after and the day after and the day after that We're just going to keep coming Yeah Until ICE shows up until somebody shows up and give us some answers The political standoff over Delaney Hall gave Newark Mayor Raz Baraka a prime time chance to show New Jersey Democrats how he might take the lead as governor Stepping up to confront the Trump administration's push to house immigrants detained by ICE in the city he declared is a sanctuary They're hiding behind ICE right now keep telling our folks that ICE has to give us permission to get in which is completely not true The fire officials and UCCC code officials were here yesterday They wouldn't let them in So now I'm here today The 55-year-old Barack is an unabashed progressive who's served as Newark's mayor for more than a decade He's got a lock on the far left lane in this tight six-way primary race And he offers voters a clear choice says writers Micah Rasmusen And I think that's really the existential question and crisis facing Democrats is how do you want to deal with Trump um when there is the flavor of the day the fight of the day Baraka will engage A former educator and son of poet activist Amiri Baraka The mayor's embraced his radical reputation But I'm not going to walk moderately or slow I think that's the problem with New Jersey is we've had this slow moderate pace We should have a big tent a blanket that warms everybody Uh we should be progressive on immigrants rights union rights making sure that we building affordable housing Baraka launched a transitional housing first initiative that helped push Newark's homeless rate down by 50% As governor he'd create a public works project to build affordable housing across the state Barack is also focused on equity in healthcare and in education but his agenda carries a big price tag Somebody has to pay the bill Uh and that's clear So when people say they're going to cut everybody's taxes they're just not telling the truth He notes everyone should pay their fair share including the millionaires and billionaires Barack has campaigned around the state but did not seek endorsements from party bosses at county conventions He's carving out his constituencies amongst progressives and people of color A recent Eagleton poll shows Baraka's far behind frontr runner Congresswoman Mikey Cheryl by some 50,000 votes Assuming the usual half million or so Democrats turn out for the statewide June primary And that's really where he's going to struggle is um how do you turn out voters he would say in response to that I'm going to excite them I'm going to enthuse them Well I get that But Newark under Baraka's tenure as mayor has had pretty poor voter turnout and they underestimate uh the people of New Jersey They are relying on this concept that New Jerseyians are not ready to elect an African-American man as the governor of the state of New Jersey And they're wrong Actually two African-American men Baraka and NJA President Sean Spiller who's on the New Jersey PBS Community Advisory Board are on the Democrat's primary ballot for governor I'm Brenda Flanigan NJ Spotlight News [Music]
