I think I got it for, like, $299, probably in, like, 1978, '79.
APPRAISER: It's a 1955 Gretsch Duo Jet, which was Gretsch's...
GUEST: Really.
APPRAISER: ...competition with the Gibson Les Paul.
And although it looks like a Gibson Les Paul, like a solid body, the body is actually chambered.
GUEST: Really?
APPRAISER: So it sounds, it sounds quite different.
And Gretsch, being a drum company, they couldn't resist adding their own touch.
So the finish on the top is nitron, which was what they used on...
GUEST: Wow.
APPRAISER: ...on the outside of their drums.
GUEST: Right.
APPRAISER: That's why it looks so great, is 'cause it just doesn't scratch.
The chrome is just, is in remarkably good condition.
They only had these DeArmond Dynasonic pickups...
GUEST: Yeah.
APPRAISER: ...for another year or two.
In a vintage guitar shop, Gretsch like this would sell for just under $5,000...
GUEST: Yeah.
APPRAISER: ...$4,700 pretty easily.
APPRAISER: It's just a classic example of the '50s rock and roll guitar.
GUEST: Yeah.
