Providing Support for PBS.org
Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- I was standing in front of the Gallery Mall, at 9th & Market, and had got my headphones on, and I get a tap on my shoulder.
And when I turn around, it's the most beautiful woman I've ever, ever seen.
It threw me full at an instance.
I can honestly say I've never believed in love at first sight, but it happened.
And her name was Sharday.
I'm looking at her, hearts and her eyes, jaw drops to the ground.
And I couldn't believe that this young lady is standing in front of me.
And I found love in her, that I didn't get for a long time from my parents.
My dad was a rolling stone.
My mom worked so hard and then she was so into herself.
And plus I was look so much and I act so much like my father, I believe she didn't like me, because I was so much like him.
I wanted to be like him, I envied his love that he got from the streets.
So I look for the same thing and I got it.
Going to bars, being with my friends, just hanging out and drinking, and partying That was my life for so long.
I never knew what a good relationship was until I had my first.
Then I got that sense of, oh, there's somebody that I can give my all to, not just physically but my mental and emotional pain.
Every day that I came home from work.
When she heard the key in the door, she would run to the door and she'd grab, she would put her hands and grab both of my face, both sides of my face and get me the hugest kiss.
It was all about me and her.
Me loving her and her loving me.
But I've never felt a love like this before.
I lost Sharday in 2010, to a disease that she had.
And it damaged me so much that after a little while, I just fell off, I became a bonafide alcoholic again.
My boss gave me a month off to deal with my grieving.
I completely lost it.
Something came over me and said, you might as well die.
So you can be with her again.
I grabbed a bottle of Brandy and I jumped in my car and I was getting ready to drive off a bridge.
But something stopped at and I believe it was guys playing for me to pull over and fall asleep.
I get a wake up from an officer asking me why am I on this highway sleeping.
And I rolled down my windows, it's 90 degrees outside.
So all my tears was dried up on my face.
And he said, "Why are you crying?"
I said, "'Cause I lost the best thing that happened to me, My girlfriend."
And he said, "Wow."
And I told him the story.
And this young man gives me the biggest hug.
And he says, "I know how you feel.
'Cause I lost my wife to cancer."
Something else came over me.
And I started believe again, life was worth living.
So I want to say that, we are gonna go through stuff.
I'm still going through this thing, but when you believe in something higher than you, it takes you through some of the bad times and brings you into a better place.
I used believe that I would never be loved again, like I was with her But that's not totally true.
'Cause there is a unconditional love that I have found now.
And it comes from my Lord and savior, Jesus Christ.
Yes is been a struggle as far as being okay in this life.
But I have believed that I know that it's gonna get better.
As long as I continue to not allow it to take me backwards, to the substance and relying on things and people to make me happy.
I got a new girlfriend now.
(David laughs) And she makes me feel like my Sharday did.
I am so grateful to my God that He is allowing me to love again.
(soft music)
