Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
Your can't get for the mayor.
Has a all.
It's college wrestling 15th anniversary this evening from Carver Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa.
Public Television Sports brings you the big in-state rematch between the number three ranked Iowa State cyclones and the number one ranked Iowa Hawkeyes.
Hello, everybody.
I'm Doug Brown with Tim Johnson back for our final meet of the 15th anniversary season.
And then in two weeks, we'll have another anniversary, our 20th high school state meet from Des Moines.
And at the intermission, we can have a little fun.
We're going to pick out the winners in our drawing for NCAA tickets.
Well, it's Iowa and Iowa State and the last time we saw Iowa State was against Iowa.
And that's where we found out that Iowa is a very special team.
They won the first seven matches against Iowa State.
Then the Hawkeyes lost the last three, putting a little thought in Dan Gable.
He worries about that ever since.
Now these two teams have over the years had some awfully good matches, even when one team was ranked much higher than the other.
Well, the Cyclones have had a little tough going lately, though they haven't won in this series since 1987, and they've never won in Carver Hawkeye Arena.
Won out the first time these two teams met, Iowa won and Iowa State lost.
And you put these two teams together and that's the only loss either team has had all year in 38 matches.
Wow.
39.
Well, when you think about Iowa State, they're a really pleasant surprise to wrestling this year.
If Iowa's number one dual team in the nation, Iowa State's number two, they have between five and seven possible All-Americans, I believe.
And Iowa last week, we saw them twice and I think they proved what a terrific team they can be.
I think it's one of the best teams Dan Gable has ever had up and down the line.
Ten possible All-Americans, I believe.
But I think you'll still see Dan Gable biting his nails tonight because he's still not convinced they're as good as he wants them to be.
You know, £118, they always start out fast.
That's the big cliche, almost what we say.
And they have two fast starters on these teams.
Iowa State's man is Eric Aiken.
He has started out fast for the Cyclones.
He's a three time state champion out of Kansas.
He's a real go getter and he has a lot of talent.
But at 118 for Iowa, it was Chad's capital.
And last time he started a little quicker than Aiken.
He's explosive pound for pound may be the strongest man on the on the team.
He really has an aggressive counter style.
He's one of the fastest improving 18 pounders in the nation.
Hey, here's a surprise for you.
If you're an Iowa state watcher, Steve Hamilton is going to be in the middle tonight, but he is going to be at £150.
I've seen it in his eyes since he was a freshman.
He wants to be a national titlist.
He's an all-American at 158 as a freshman and sophomore.
But he feels 150 is where he has his best shot at the NCAA championship.
Now, Torrie Jackson won't just give up that position.
They're going to have to wrestle that off.
But Jackson will be at 158 tonight.
Let's talk heavyweights for a while.
Iowa State has a heavyweight who's one of the fastest rising, pleasant surprises of the year, Todd Kenney.
Well, I think Todd Kenney is he's won some big matches for Iowa State this year.
And when he gets on top, he's really dangerous.
He's a Pinner.
And for Iowa it's John Austin Dark won the Dan cable's been a little worried about.
It's a key weight for Dan Gable on his way to a national title he says he's got to perform for him and John's had an up and down year and it depends on which big show comes out for him tonight.
The heat for this match.
Not the 150 and 58 switch, isn't the only change in the lineup.
We must mention that Iowa State does not have £134 covered tonight.
How can they overcome that?
Well, a lot of teams have come in with The Wrestler at 134 against John Brands, and they have enough to overcome it.
They've given up six there.
But I don't think that's the point.
I think there's going to be some exciting individual matches tonight.
But the Hawkeyes have to be favored.
It's Iowa State and Iowa.
The rematch coming up next on Iowa Public Television.
All the while.
And we're back at Carver Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City for the big rematch between number three, Iowa State and number one, Iowa.
We're going to take a look at how these two teams have done in past affairs.
It's an Iowa series so far, 332 and 14 Iowa won ten in a row for them last year and two of them in the national dual tournament.
They had four meetings in one season in 1991.
And the matchups today will, as we suggested on the just before the meet and the opening show, some surprises.
One of them is that Iowa State doesn't have anybody weighing in at £134 and Tom Brands will win by a forfeit.
Six points for Iowa right there.
Russ Dad, Sean.
Russ Dad will make the first of the Steiners And look at 250.
There's Steve Hamilton down at 150 for the first time at 158.
And a reversal of the two positions, Corey Jackson That doesn't mean it's permanent by any means.
They haven't wrestled off and it hasn't been decided yet.
177 Matt Johnson nursing a sore ankle or Mike Kelly against Marcelo six right there set it on 90 and at heavyweight it's Jamie Cutler or Todd Kelly against Austin Dorf It may be Cutler we don't know we'll wait and see when they get up toward the end but here we are in Carver Hawkeye Arena where Iowa has been devastating.
Tim Johnson in the meetings we've seen him this year and in fact, the meetings last week that we broadcast for you, the coaches of these two teams, Jim Gibbons for Iowa State, his assistants are Steve and his brother Joe Gibbons, Less Anderson, and pile on Dan Gable.
He thinks if they wrestle the way they did for all the many 15 seconds of the Oklahoma State meet man, what a team this would be.
Dave Fresh of Colorado Springs is the official.
He was scheduled to officiate the first meet to what they do between Iowa State and Iowa is schedule the same referee for both meets home and home.
And he wasn't able to make it that first one.
Here's how the two teams have done against the top teams.
Iowa State wrestles Oklahoma State a week from today.
They haven't wrestled Ohio State and Iowa hasn't wrestled Nebraska.
But that's how they've done it.
Otherwise, at Penn State, as a matter of fact, with an Iowa victim was an Iowa state victim.
And then one of those Iowa meets, it was a tie.
That's the only blot on the entire Hawkeye record this year.
Well, which which Iowa team and which Iowa State team will show up today?
That's the question.
Well, that is the question, Doug.
And when they both come out aggressive, exciting style, here we go.
At 118.
It's his capital who gets out very fast for Iowa.
He beat very good badly the first time, even though both men are known as fast starters and have set the tempo for their team's success this year, Chad's capital has won 29 out of 30 matches.
And I would say right off hand, he's a definite contender for the national title.
At the beginning of the show that I think he's one of the fastest and proven 18 pounders in the nation.
But Eric Aiken certainly has an opportunity to get in there and be an all-American, too.
And we'll just see how close he is to zapping.
All right.
Now, after getting beat the first time, as bad as he did.
My impression has been, even though Eric Aiken has been a fast starter in these tough matches, he has had a tendency to get behind and against the Wisconsin wrestler that he beat badly.
Eventually he had to come from behind to do it.
He got down by two takedowns very early on.
He wrestled zap until the first time he couldn't get the cut, couldn't come back.
Well, I think you made a good point here.
It depends on how well Aiken's able to slow this match down in one sense and not let capital get off to a big start.
Referee Dave Frisch lets us know right away that he's not going to let people cruise at all.
He has already called for him for inactivity.
A warning next time, a point for somebody like.
We've talked about it before, there it is a good defense, but Eric Aiken needs to take advantage of that, get back in.
But capital works the head so much and he takes everything off, either working the head or counter shots.
Eric Aiken did a nice job of defense right there and getting out.
The referee, Dave Fresh, has wrestled.
You'll see the NCAA patch on his shirt.
He has refereed NCAA tournaments as a well known official around the sport of wrestling in the country.
And here he is in Iowa City, Iowa, Iowa State and the hawks there is a nice little highlight pick up by zapping all his power.
Didn't get him the point, though.
Okay.
You can fight off only so long, though.
And so that was a nice shot.
And every bit of work so far has been made by Chad Zapiro from Iowa.
Eric Aiken has not made any moves yet.
He's been nothing but nothing, nothing but powdering.
They're going back to the middle again.
How much time they used, they used more than 2 minutes out of the three in the first period.
Right.
You know, what I see here is the key to Eric Aiken is if he can keep it close after the first period and get on top and do some damage from the top position, which he which he has the ability to do.
That's the key to a win for Eric Aiken.
But he has not made a serious move yet.
And capital still ties up to head.
There is the shot by Zap, which by Aiken, which will probably keep him from being called for and he's stalling for the next few seconds.
Exactly right, Doug.
He he needed that shot in there so far as a strategy to keep it close and then not let zap.
It'll get on a roll.
20 seconds to go in the first period.
I think the very close to the edge.
This is definitely a different match than it has been than I was in the past.
Capital has won two matches the first time, 10 to 5.
The second time in the Iowa State duel by a bigger score, the match.
And it is a scoreless first period.
But each man was more.
Well, this is right, Larry.
Greg Aiken wanted to be as far as the match circumstance zero zero after the first period.
Great.
First zapping all the defers.
That's going down.
Aiken is going to try to come out from under his capital now.
Even now he's got a warning to song.
Go to Warren.
Zap ATL starts to ride Russell at Centerville High School.
Although his hometown is mystic.
Eric Aiken comes from Overland Park, Kansas, right good counter on the counter there.
Abide by capital to keep Aiken from coming out he was almost out.
Was there Eric are zapped all is usually a pretty good basic rider but he does like to be on his feet right here and so now they're back with Aiken leading one zero with that escape.
And again, they both have the little sword hanging over their heads.
They have been warned.
Each man and I have a suspicion that Fresh is not going to let him get away with that one.
Get it?
All right.
Look, the score now go down.
Go in at 25 to go in the second period of a scoreless shot meet.
Good job.
Little reached by Aiken, but not much of a move on zapping Owen Powers.
And on the leg.
Here he is on the edge of the mat in his best position yet.
Got back back as good shot by Chad's capital but that was great.
Hip action by Eric Aiken to keep from being taken down.
Through the crowd gets in it for the first time.
That's the look a little stir in the crowd.
They haven't had much to yell about so far.
You know, it's interesting that the shot.
Out there is the point.
That's the point that ties it.
It's a penalty against Aiken for inactivity.
One, one.
Let's go.
52nd, second period.
Let's go.
Let's go, Let's go.
What about I say Aiken has not made any good moves.
There was a heel pick and he puts an inch and almost on his back.
It's a 3 to 1 lead for capital.
The first takedown.
Well, Zavala kept the charge up.
He kept going forward.
He kept going forward.
And he got the stalling call.
I think that took just a little zip out of Aiken right there.
And Jeff was able to shoot in, get that takedown, and now up 3 to 1, the momentum definitely for Iowa's capital.
They fresh 27 talking to Eric Aiken as he sends the Iowa state freshman back to the center again to the down position.
This is where he can start at the period step.
Now, he escaped in fairly quick order for gets to his feet again with the now working on some hand control and he's out.
Great to be.
Here with the score Well right here was capitals attack right here.
Aiken has to keep his feet moving.
He's got to keep moving right here for a couple of reasons to keep from being.
Take it down.
Oh, oh, and to keep from getting warned for stalling.
And he was able to stay.
Dodged that bullet right there.
And it's a 3 to 2 match with Aiken on top.
And I said, I think.
There's Joe Stafford.
Oh, that's Chad's father looking a little more worried that he might with a 3 to 2 score, then he might have the last zap capital starts on his feet.
That's his choice.
He feels confident up here.
Well, I think that's exactly right.
And he didn't want to take the chance of getting underneath when he has dominated on the feet.
And Marcus Aiken has not intimidated capital yet.
He hasn't given him a real shot on his feet.
He's countered well, a couple of times.
Here comes Stafford.
Along the double leg, is doing a nice job of hip capital, did a nice job of staying tight on the hips and.
Continuing to drive forward.
Nice takedown for Chad's capital.
Does a double leg takedown by Zapiro looks good and the Hawks lead 5 to 2 here.
Right here.
They call it.
I call it one of them.
Oh.
The like I said, two teams that these two men go.
It was a major decision for his capital.
Oh, all right.
You ain't going back.
Aiken is not out yet.
That is capital wrestling a real smart match here?
He's a very basic rider space type.
He's got a 5 to 2 lead.
15 to 6.
The first time these two men met a major decision.
Now Aiken is out, but right on time belongs to Zaffino.
He's ahead 6 to 2.
He's had 5 to 3 with riding time.
And he can still has to get the takedown.
He can't be tackled without taking.
It could push the capital here.
It'd be a stalling point against Zaffino.
And then you would have a takedown on a net would tie.
But he's not able to put too much power here.
A lot of power for Zaffino.
And he takes the lead 7 to 3 on his third takedown.
And I believe.
He may be the pound for pound, the strongest man on the team.
He really power pack scored.
7 to 3 with 15 seconds to go.
Remember, at 126, it'll be Terry Brandes against Dan Knight coming up next.
I think what we've got to remember, too, is Aiken definitely has a shot at being an all-American.
He's one of the better 18 pounders in the in the nation right now.
And that's how good Zabit has become this year.
He's really come in.
Aiken is only a freshman capital, a sophomore in eligibility I.
Don't know going out get that young.
Man and here comes let him.
Out and go go.
Zap ATL seven, Aiken three.
And it's going to end right here today with riding time.
It's an 8 to 3 victory for Chad's capital market after money and Iowa takes a three to nothing lead over Iowa State in the first match.
A tough go there.
Eric Aiken went to a scoreless first period, but capital dominated on the feet.
Hip.
Hip, hip penetration.
He didn't get the first and get the second.
The capital kept coming after until he did get his takedowns.
And that was the difference.
And he had one in the second period, two in the third and one at 8 to 3.
Here we go at £126.
Terry Brant, your number one ranked defending national champion Terry France for Iowa against the number four ranked Dan Knight all-American from Iowa State ready.
Contrasting styles here and what needs to be done by our stay here is to open up Danny Knight needs to open up if he expects any kind of opportunity because he can throw he's dangerous, he can throw from anywhere.
And he's a big move wrestler Terry Brandes, on the other hand, is a picker and he can just pick me apart.
He has so many things that he can do, but he's relentless.
He keeps coming at you.
He's a penetrator and more of a lower body attack.
The first time they met Terry Brandes was a four to nothing winner.
It was a close match, but Knight was unable to take him down or get away.
I did.
From underneath.
Looking good.
Looking good, buddy.
Keep the pressure.
Rams and go.
Two of the best to come out of Iowa High School.
Dan Knight, a four time high school champion.
Undefeated in high school.
Dan Knight out of Clinton, Iowa.
Hey, they're both juniors.
That's it.
Iowa leads three to nothing After £118.
Zap all came on stronger as the match went on.
And bacon eight for three grabs it on a single and he still doesn't have it Something of a whizzer by knight he gave it up and it's two for Terry Brown gets to work for two to nothing on a single leg takedown by the defending national champion Terry Branch, whose brother Tom will not be seen tonight except when he goes out to have his hand raised.
Iowa State forfeits at 134 tonight.
Nobody weighed in.
You get your hips out right now.
Hips up?
Yeah.
Come on.
And when these two teams met in Ames, Iowa, won the first seven matches and then lost the last three.
A lot of Iowa's fast starts are right here.
He's in on the single.
And look out Terry Brandes gets his head to the outside, cuts off to a double, comes to his feet, gets good position and now finally at the end of this stand, Knight sees that he's in too much trouble.
He might give up four or five and he's going to give up two.
And that was because of a good position by Terry Brandes.
Back in action again with a minute and a half to go in the first Terry Branch as he is trying to load up Knight and tell him for a back point when they have been relatively close in the past.
Those tilts make those back points make all the difference.
I think the difference between Terry and Tom Brands and a lot of wrestlers, like most wrestlers, they have periods of time where they let up a little bit and they get involved with technique and aren't as tough on pop or whatever.
Terry Brands is relentless.
He just is on top of your head.
It's like having a jackhammer on top of you or against you.
The entire match that wears down the best of a.
Really tough forearm on Knight's right arm and preventing the Iowa State wrestler from going anywhere.
He's trying to double up both.
Well, Iowa likes to call him one half of the branding irons.
And, you know, that's kind of a corny sounding cliche, but it's it's true because it's just on you all the time.
And it's probably a mark that never comes off.
I went to take it off.
And Knight, who has a history of shoulder problems, too, by the way, has a tough time with Terry Brown's gets him in that bar, too.
And I think Terry Brandes over the Iowa State wrestler Dan Knight International.
Start right out here.
Rembrandts comes down.
He's not going to let them go out.
20 seconds to go.
In the first period at £126.
And again, Branch has been wrestling very tough on top as he did against the first time.
You see that.
Pressure warning against Knight.
See that pressure that Carrie Brands is putting on?
He's got the arm behind the back.
He's got the pressure on him all the time.
And he's trying to turn himself, trying to get it so that he can pry the arm back and drive it over.
A lot of riding time.
57.
So Brandes has to for the takedown and a potential point with that.
Like the first great.
Dave Fresh asks Dan Knight what he wants to do, and he deferred brands.
We'll start at the bottom again.
We talk about how good the Iowa State wrestler is.
That's on the short end of the day and night.
Finished third in the nation last year.
This is the first and third generation people at 126.
Why should great brands put.
This state under for 11 seconds there and then came out and in college three to nothing in on a double leg against Dan Knight.
And it's got to be a tough double leg because.
Dan Knight is really good in that position against almost any other wrestler.
He had an opportunity.
They hit a headlock there and he's really proficient at that.
But Terry Brands kept coming forward with that hip fight.
Five to nothing here, five to nothing in favor of brands.
And he's back on the bar arm again and had a day fresh in your head.
Who has a microphone on him by the way you can hear him talk to the you why the wrestlers wants to make sure that the angle on the shoulder doesn't get dangerous.
Oh way half Nelson by brand for he.
And the Iowa bench are furious he.
Thought he was inbounds here this takedown the reason Terry Brown's got is he's.
Never really got out of bad position period.
Hey.
Boy, I'll tell you what.
That last takedown there to the back or that last drive to the back by Carrie Brands was very close as being legal or not.
It looked like it was in bounds.
And Dan Gable's words were, are you kidding me?
5 to 1 in favor of brands.
That's the first point in two matches that Knight has been able to score against one of the pioneers here.
And he's just taken it to Brand to ban Knight on his feet.
Sorry that was he just powered him down.
And now, dad, light's going to have to get his head together or he's going to get beat bad here.
72 is a score and brands he's really working it over on his feet.
Here he comes.
In the tube, you know, it's snapped.
You know, it's just incredible.
We have an injury time here and Knight.
Is complaining about the shoulder.
Here's I'll coach and Gable.
Look at this.
He's in tight right here.
Stays in good position, gets the whizzer there, then comes back around and stuffs the head right here now, snaps the head and goes around for the takedown right there.
He hit his head on the mat a little bit there, I think.
And also a shoulder right there.
Shoulder hurt there from the from the dry.
But Kerry brand snaps and goes around, drops the leg, snaps goes around behind the arms, drops the legs, cradles.
You saw him start to cradle up.
He has so many now.
They're still working over.
All right here.
Here he comes on again.
Right here.
Now, watch his head right here.
His head hits.
They're on the mat.
And then not much to do with it.
And then he withers the shoulder around here.
And then when they're going out, you'll see him drive down.
Back to the center again.
Terry Brands has piled up now a 9 to 2 lead over Dan Knight, and he's begun to pile on.
Here we have 25 seconds to go.
In the second period, Knight goes into the down position, breaks up by seven with riding time, a ton of it 2 minutes and 38 seconds goes to work on top.
And Knight has been warned once in hours.
There's the bar arm on the arm that Knight was nursing a moment ago.
Rams go to work period ends 9 to 2 hits like.
I've done before as Barney Brands.
So you only get to see one of his sons wrestle tonight.
Sometimes that can be a blessing.
Mom gets so darn nervous.
Knight gets his choice.
He will start in the down position.
When I was wrestling, my mom always had a seat by herself.
Nobody would get close to her.
They got elbows in the side and everything else.
Come on, Danny, Suck it up.
Well, that's why I think a lot of people so far apart at wrestling these guys, it's pretty hard to watch and sit stone still if you're a fan at all.
Terry Bradley It's 9 to 2.
Starts in the top position.
He's trying to lock up a cradle here.
He can do it from anywhere and he will.
He'll try from anywhere.
What's ahead in the side?
He has dominated day and night here at £126.
Oh.
Good.
There's a point on the bar against the bottom ten to.
To announce a major decision.
You know, he said that Danny Knight was laying on his belly.
He has night.
With a half Nelson to the mat.
Oh, and he has a lot of time.
Right.
Here it is with a minute and 10 seconds left.
That's his 15th fall of the year.
He leaves the team.
Leads the team involved.
And I think there's a big difference between number one this year and a lot of others here.
Look at this Underhook right there on the bar, driving over with the chin.
He had the chin tied right there.
You can cut the chest.
It wasn't long.
Shoulders flat for the fall.
And that's it.
5 minutes and 50 seconds into the match, the winner by a fall he was leading at the time.
10 to 2 is Terry Brand's.
And what happened at £134?
Tom Brandes wins by a forfeit.
Iowa State did not win a match and it is a forfeit worth six points and Iowa goes up 15.
Timothy.
Now we go to 140 to Troy Steiner for the Hawks ranked fifth against Shawn Ruston for Iowa State was born up an oyster bell, but he came to Iowa State from Kenai, Alaska, as a junior and then goes Steiner on that leg right away, the hawks are rolling and the Cyclones.
Did nothing.
To put the brakes on here a little bit.
Does it can get away into a big, big steamroller?
Well, that's what their first four or five are all about, being a steamroller for the Iowa Hawkeyes.
And I'd say there's probably nobody any more on a roll then Troy Steiner right now.
Then he's ranked 50 kicked out for Steiner, but he's a definite title contender at £142.
It seems to me Also.
I think the difference between Troy Steiner last year and this is physical.
Yes, I think he's gained a lot of confidence.
I think he's being more physical on the mat.
And I think that's what the coaches were hoping for.
And when he gets people in the other position, he can stick it.
So he's working right out front.
He's confident.
He bars the arm and comes right out front before going into his favorite position, which is the leg in.
And he can make it a long night for somebody with this.
John Resta right now junior at Iowa State, seven or nine this year.
What I've noticed about Troy Steiner lately is he can make it a short night for me.
That's true.
Well, then we'll have an interesting one with Terry Steiner coming up next, because we'll see.
For the first time this year and the first time, I can think in a while, if probably ever in college.
Steve Hamilton at £150 for Iowa State instead of 158.
He and Terry Jackson are switching against Iowa today.
He's been an all-American twice on 58, and now he's down at 150 because he wants more than just to be an all-American.
And he feels that's a good weight for him.
So it'll be interesting to see.
Doug, right here we have Troy Steiner again working that leg legs in, working the arm bars and the Half Nelson up there because he's looking to turn and look at that and he's got the arm bar tight got.
Him to close to then that's a two point NEAR-FALL.
Four to nothing.
Warning nothing for the Hawkeye Troy Steiner And look up.
And look up with it.
It's still it Steiner is really have to be the pride of North Dakota in wrestling coming out of North Dakota, not known as a big wrestling state.
And they've come out and really proven themselves in the Iowa Hawkeye lineup.
Former forward John Rust ad is behind four to nothing and he is now flat on his chest.
Sure, he let it go.
You've got to work up.
Like it's there.
You see it?
Chondrocytes face it.
It's easy for you to say.
Well, you know, that's a good point that you make there, right, Doug?
And that John was that if that's what he was thinking, there's such a thing as dominance.
There's such a thing as not being able to get up and move against somebody that is a lot better than you and that shouldn't be stalling, then Pop should be going for that ball.
Two more points for Steiner on a tilt.
Makes it six oh try Steiner is twin brother Terry is next against Steve Hamilton.
Here comes another one who and Shawn Russell at two.
He couldn't stop that one either.
That's the third.
Nearfall on a tilt.
But first period.
Ends eight to nothing.
You get out of luck.
The Daniel's.
Right here.
He's got it up.
He's going to load Russ Dad up on his hips right here.
See, he's using his leg.
See why his legs right up there holding Russ Dad there for the two points Pit Nearfall.
He uses every part of his body right there.
Troy Steiner From the arms to the toes.
A lot of technique.
Troy Steiner starts in the under position here against Russ.
Dad.
I'll take it one finger, Bob said.
He's always said you need to wrestle from the tip of your toes to the top of the head.
And I think Troy Steiner's doing it.
When Steiner stood, Russ, Dad had to go down with the ankle In here.
Is Steiner coming around behind and up like that?
Russ Dad still has the advantage.
That's going to be a stalemate.
That's too much trouble on the knee, I think probably, too.
On.
2 minutes and 2 seconds of riding time for Steiner left back.
Russ Dad's down on the leg, but he's managed to keep Steiner in tow here just for the first part of the second period.
Now, again, there is Russ dad having to go low, go red still has the advantage.
This does this look like it stays?
Have you ever seen that?
That before, Doug?
Yes.
Here comes Steiner around.
Now, the reversal makes a ten to nothing proves that.
Of course, what I'm.
Referring to is that the Iowa State cyclones do not have a takedown yet.
But that's not unusual for Iowa's opponents.
In the last three dual meets we've seen about this weight class.
Their opponents have not had a takedown.
They're pretty scary from the bottom up.
And they're getting scarier at the top.
Troy Steiner leads here ten oh, with 35 seconds to go.
He's come up right up front, goes right up in front of the head.
Let's go to turn his man from there if he can.
And if he loses.
Russ Dad, there he figures it's worth it because he can take him down again, pitches him.
This is what he's after.
Oh, Headscissors.
Oh, well, he has three wide.
I don't know if he has.
He doesn't have enough time to pin it here, but he is getting a three point near-fall 13.
Nothing.
Here's a reminder as we look at Jim Gibbons there that we'll be showing you our traditional college wrestling memories musical montage at intermission and then will be drawing the three sets of NCAA wrestling tickets.
That's you may have written interviewed for a chance at.
And we'll look at the stats from the first half as well.
This period they start on their feet.
Russ dad wanted to stay up.
No more of that going underneath the back.
He started a duck under Steiner.
I crack it.
They're very methodical, technically sound.
He comes right out, rushed out here, leading 13 to nothing.
This will end the match 15 nothing technical foul.
A 15 point margin makes it a technical foul worth five points for the team.
And after £142 it is Iowa 20 and the Cyclones zero College wrestling will continue on your statewide home for sports Iowa Public Television.
After we pause for station ID, here we are again at Carver Hawkeye Arena.
The last time Iowa State and Iowa met up and held it was seven matches of Iowa, then three matches of Iowa State.
The Cyclones would like to get into the little scoring a little earlier.
Here they have Steve Hamilton now down at £150 against Terry Steiner.
I think for some people that was something of a surprise.
But it's been in the wind for a while, probably.
Well, I think that it's kind of Steve Hamilton has it in mind to be his rebirth as far as wrestling is concerned.
He was at 158, was having trouble scoring against some guys that really were a little bit bigger than him.
And he wants to win the national title.
We talked about it and I think that he feels at 150 is where he should be.
But as you mentioned, he still hasn't got the spot because Corey Jackson is also a 150 pounder and they'll be a wrestle off later, I'm sure.
But Torrie Jackson will be up at 158 today against Ryan Slater, who is ranked number one.
Here comes Hamilton against Terry Steiner.
Working in.
Steiner's right, number five at this rate, Hamilton was number two, up at 158, although he had lost to Ray Miller since those rankings came out.
Hey, if Terry Steiner can establish himself on the feet, then Steve Hamilton's in trouble because Gary Steiner, like his brother, is good on top.
And so it's a real key first few minutes here for the Iowa wrestler to see what he can do on his feet.
Well, it's interesting, too, that Steve Hamilton cut weight.
He went down to 150 for the first time.
So that happened.
What kind of effect does that have on you sometimes?
Well, I think sometimes it has some effect.
But I think Steve Hamilton may or may be a 150 pounder.
So if you're going to the weight, you should be it should have no, you know, shouldn't have any ill effects.
And I think he looks good at 150, Doug, actually, as far as just looking at him physically.
A minute and 50 to go in the first period, no score.
STEINER is part of the twins set from Bismarck Century High School.
I have a lecture to work the head hard.
Hamilton does, too, is he tussles on the head.
You know, back to your point, the high crotch.
High right by Steiner.
I think he cuts it across.
He's got a shot.
There's hip action, good hip action by Steve Hamilton.
And Steiner still won't give that move up.
He's he's in there strong on the high leg.
Bell right here.
Steve Hamilton needs to keep the hip.
He doesn't need to get in tight, do anything bad.
He needs to stuff the head right there.
Yeah, going Back to your point as far as if there are some effects, Doug, we'll see it in the third period as far as cutting down for the first time.
And I think that's where we'll see it.
And we that Terry Steiner doesn't have to cut a lot of weight.
So if there's a, you know, there's an adjustment, it's in your shape.
Last minute of the first period.
Now Iowa leaves 20 to nothing.
Having won the first four matches, one of them a forfeit of £134.
Tom Brands did not have an opponent.
Tonight, 45.
You're looking to score now.
But there was a pin at 126 when Terry Bryant dominated Dan night and pinned him and 550.
I'll go.
After the first match between Zaf and on taking one away.
Here's an outside single by Hamilton.
See where he goes with it.
You'll get two good technicians here working at each other.
But he needs to execute here.
He needs to commit to the move all the way.
He's staying right after it.
He has one thing in mind, and that's to get that takedown.
And he got out.
Steiner got away.
Hamilton lost it right up here.
And that's Jim Gibbons.
Big cheer from the Iowa fans as they watch their 150 pounder, Terry Steiner, up against Steve Hamilton.
What's the song at Waste of Time?
First period is going to end without a score.
When Steiner gets his choice, he'll go down.
Took a look at Dan Gable and they agreed.
So Hamilton goes in on top.
Change over work and work and working.
Steiner gets to his feet right away and out and takes the lead.
One The nothing.
Ever.
One thing I can guarantee is Steve Hamilton needs to be able to go all 7 minutes because Terry Steiner will.
That's the one thing I see about the Hawkeyes right now in those first five weeks is they have the ability to go 7 minutes and more with the type of style they have.
You want to be more than close when you're wrestling The Hawkeyes last year, both man work in the head.
You can see.
Doyle.
Now there's a warning against Steiner going out.
You're back.
As soon as you walk in here.
You'll see right now that ought to motivate Steve Hamilton.
He ought to be able to get after him to know that he's got Steiner.
Maybe thinking a little bit about that stalling Paul.
Jones thought it was an interesting there's a an outside single by Hamilton again he got here once before and couldn't.
Keep it needs to keep him in the center and commit to this all the way to the man right here.
What Terry Steiner needs to do is keep putting the pressure down.
Look for that with it.
Nope.
And he caught Steiner, almost caught him on his back that time as he came down.
And actually, Steiner did a great job of getting back to his face real fast, because just one more second of hesitation.
And Hamilton would have had him cut down.
To two on Hamilton.
That's the first takedown, by the way, for Iowa State in this meet up.
Let's see if Hamilton could keep him down right here.
He does not have to go underneath in that third period.
And I think that's really important.
But we'll see how that plays out.
I guess real important right here for Steve Hamilton, He doesn't he isn't able.
To do it.
That's a big move by Terry Steiner.
Really important.
Two, two with 13 seconds to go in the second period.
Lots of big hey right here here takedown is able to driving he almost caught him Steiner did a nice job of getting back to his base.
Got to work for second.
The period is going to end with no more scores.
And Hamilton will have a choice here.
I think there's a whole discussion.
We have to get better looking at over and head down.
And he will go down.
He will take the down position again.
Steiner style likes to put the leg in right.
Here we go.
I think that's a real interesting choice right here.
That really 40 seconds of writing time belong to Hamilton.
Now, that's not enough for a point.
Using a little margin of error here, he went into a roll.
Oh, and he just keeps right on coming.
A good scramble.
And it's two for Hamilton.
I saw a lot of determination there by Hamilton.
He was going to get out of it.
His mind he had it.
So he really did more than score points there, as far as I'm concerned.
He knew.
He knows it.
Steiner has a lot going for him on the legs, and he wanted to establish some.
Respect right here.
He comes up and look at this determination.
Good, good pressure there and good position.
He's going after the two points and he ends up with it.
Okay, now we start with a minute 35 to go again.
Hamilton cut way to get to 150.
The score is 4 to 3 now after the escape and the crowd gets in, it.
Interesting scramble as Steiner comes under on the.
Double leg tires in good position right here.
He can turn something into it.
Oh, he's got to turn around.
It's a scrambling nothing yet.
A minute to go.
And right there, Steve.
Hambleton, is to just stay on that leg.
You see Hamilton reaching for the other leg, finally stop and that's a stalemate.
Hey, I'm.
Impressed by that right.
Now.
He got in on that like really?
Well, He needs to keep that going.
As far as the Iowa wrestler is.
Concerned, Terry Steiner needs to do just what he did.
Right there.
Get it on the leg.
Let's get him on.
That was a nice job by Kerry Steiner, because Steve had it for two, three feet.
They need to both show their offense right now.
Great match.
46 seconds to go at £150 in Steve Hamilton.
Yes, you're looking right.
He did get to 150.
If you're just joining us, he has a one point lead over Terry Steiner.
And Steiner goes in on the double leg.
Blocked by Hamilton.
The aggressor is going to win here.
And right now, Steiner wants it.
Hamilton needs to keep the offense up himself.
This is great out of our.
What, 26 seconds to go, Terry Steiner ranked fifth at 150.
He's in on the single, the high crotch.
Nice high crotch.
15 seconds.
Watch it and it ends right there.
A tough match there for.
No riding time.
A 4 to 3 victory for Steve Hamilton over a deeply disappointed Terry Steiner.
Steiner gave a great match right there.
He kept the offense on and he came so close.
I'm really impressed with his offense at the end.
Steve Hamilton cut to £150 and Iowa State has scored.
Just before intermission with a decision.
Hamilton over Steiner for two.
Three, an unpopular one, of course, here in Carrboro, Hawkeye Arena.
That's the end of £150 match.
TIM And I'll be back in just a moment with more coverage.
We're back at Carver Hawkeye Arena.
It's halftime of the Iowa State.
Iowa dual meet with the score 22 three in favor of the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Now, what we're we've all been waiting for the big drawing for three pairs of NCAA wrestling championship tickets.
Here's Doug Brown.
Well, my friend, if you put in an entry for the NCAA tickets, here's your chance to find out whether you won or not.
And a draw at the numbers.
We have something like 2500 entries in this bag.
Here is Amber Schwartz.
Amber, before you before you get your hand in there, tell me where you're from.
I'm from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and I'm a junior here at the University.
She's one of the wrestling cheerleaders in the Iowa team.
And now this is Give me your name and where you're from.
I'm from Cammy Fleming.
I'm from Ferrell, Minnesota.
Okay, Cammy, you get ready and Amber, why don't you reach in there and draw the first one?
We're giving away three pairs of tickets for the NCAA wrestling championships to be held here in Carver Hawkeye Arena.
Just open that up.
If it's and get it ready to go.
Now, you can take another one.
The second one, we're picking up three winners, three pairs of tickets now, another one, Amber.
And you can do the the last one on the wall will read them all off, all at the same time where we pay for only the tickets.
The expenses are up to you employees and their families of Iowa Public television not eligible, will notify the winners by phone as soon as we possibly can, just as soon as possible.
And we hope that this drawing is going to work out just the way we hope it will with planned on the first winner.
This is Jeff Weisner, Rural Route two, Box 164 in Fort Madison, Iowa.
Jeff Wiseacre is one of the winners of the NCAA wrestling pairs of tickets.
Now, the second pair here is an Iowa City name, Carl Condon 1002 Tower Court of Iowa City.
And that is the second pair of tickets for the NCAA championships March 14th.
And here's the last one.
Okay.
From Dubuque, Mike Amelia's 2680, Mary would drive in Dubuque, Iowa.
The winner of the third pair of tickets.
Thank you very much, Amber Schwartz.
Yeah.
And thank you, Cami.
Now we go back to Tim Johnson.
We hope we hope you are enjoying Iowa public television's 15th anniversary coverage of college wrestling.
You know, we'll have our 20th anniversary of high school wrestling on Saturday, March 2nd, Live at 6:30 p.m.
It's always a great show.
The big three ring circus there when the best high school wrestlers there it is, Saturday, March 2nd, 630 Live.
And we have the we crowned the top 39 champions 13 in each class, a double and triple A.
It's always an exciting time and we always look forward to it.
Doug and I, it's going to be a great one.
The 20th anniversary of the high school wrestling championships.
Look at those stats right there.
Team Scorpion, 22 three.
And all you have to do is look at the total points.
Scored 49 points by the Hawkeyes.
There's only been one takedown and that was by the last match.
Steve Hamilton there that won 50 for the Iowa State and the nine takedowns for the Hawkeyes.
A few near Falls for the Hawkeyes, none for the Iowa State.
It's all indicative of the score.
They're 22 to 3 right there.
And it is Iowa over Iowa State, 20 to 3 in all.
We're talking about that 20th anniversary of the high school tournament.
Well, I was there.
I remember that very well.
We did that tournament the very first one.
So as I was a senior high school.
That's right.
That's right.
I was the only junior high school student ever to broadcast a high school wrestling tournament.
The very first one I looked up to as champ, as an older fellow, there is Torrie Jackson of Iowa State, prowling around the mat and getting ready for his match against Tom Ryan at £158.
He just because that was of the something that Torrie Jackson and Steve Hamilton and the Iowa State coaching staff decided switched weights tonight with Steve Hamilton.
Hamilton won a very close decision over Terry Steiner 4 to 3 at 150.
Jackson goes up to £158 and pounds.
Will, by the way, if you want to see, we'll show you as soon as we get them out of the can, put them up on a graphic on our screen.
We'll show you the winners.
Again, the winning entries in that drawing we just had for the three pairs of NCAA wrestling tickets.
So stick around.
Here we go at 158, Tom right now, ranked number one, a junior from Lantau, New York against Torrie Jackson of Iowa State, ranked fourth at 150 and upper weight for the first time in a dual meet.
A major consequence.
He's a junior from Lansing, Michigan, 22 three Iowa won the first four matches and then Hamilton beat Steiner 423.
Couple of out of state wrestlers.
Corey Jackson, of course, his brother Kevin Jackson, paved the way to second country for him coming out of Michigan.
And it was Dan Gable who was the influence for Oh, nice little flip there.
Nice little throw into the takedown by Tom Ryan.
Not a name that Iowa guy fans knew of really before this year.
And I bet he works out a lot with this fellow right here, assistant coach Jim Zaleski, who was a three time national champion for the Hawkeyes.
At this point, that's great to.
Know.
Nothing in favor of Ryan.
He's lost only one match this year.
To come.
Out of 34.
Not good.
There are some terrific records on the Hawkeye team this year.
Of the start by Tom Ryan's.
Any indication he just may be on his way here to trying to improve his Because so many times you can get caught up in not scoring very fast and then you get yourself in a rut.
It's not bad.
It's not like he did that where it was a very aggressive start for Tom Ryan from the Hawkeyes.
I Jackson against Ryan.
Jackson's got a lot of talent he's explosive he can make some big moves himself.
That's right.
He glances at his bench, 20 seconds to see whether he should let Jackson go or not.
He's going to ride him for a while and take him back down.
I think Dan Gable or Jim Zaleski said ride him for a while, Carry him so if you can.
He got 45 seconds of riding time.
Bigger than he is.
Well, 2 to 1, after Jackson escapes 20 to 3 Iowa over Iowa State.
Black box man.
Yeah, I'm going to go back.
There we go.
We see the Hawkeye wrestler line control in the head right there.
And that's really important when you're on an opponent's head all the time.
It wears on you doesn't allow you to be in your game, use it.
Make it clear.
That you were shocked again this time.
Jackson, ready for it, managed to get to his feet and stay away.
But Ryan is the aggressor.
That's right.
He's keeping the pressure on to keep Kevin Hart, to keep Corey Jackson out of his game right there.
You do need to keep the pressure on.
Because Jackson is very quick.
There's the power.
Look at him.
He shot Jackson by for the second time.
Let's go and took him down and makes the score.
Four, two, one.
Go, go.
That better half.
You know, we've seen enough of the Iowa team this year to think that they really are an awfully good dummy team.
Why are they mopped up on Oklahoma State, which may be their biggest competition at the national tournament, remains to be seen.
Double leg now by Ryan twice.
Three takedown sets two one.
622.
What you just said there, Doug, when you said twice, that was the key he got in.
It wasn't a bad shot the first time he retreated, shot back in with a beautifully deep penetrated double right there and was able to lift him off.
Second, after.
Three and a 6 to 2 lead for Tom Ryan, three takedowns in the first period against Torrey Jackson.
Yeah, that was Tom's dad, Frank Ryan cheering on here was the take down takes him safely to the mat and he was saying you know.
They first said take it easy.
And he sure did.
But I'm on his knee almost.
Ryan starts The second period underneath.
That red tape, right down, right up, that's your up.
Jackson's out immediately.
Seven to get the shot.
And here comes Ryan again, keeping good position.
They're saying they're shot, left, right.
And coming forward, right.
You're going to get Torrey Jackson again if you're a late come right to work.
Seeing that Torrey Jackson and Steve Hamilton reversed positions for the Iowa, Jackson went up to 158, Hamilton went to 150.
Way.
There out of bounds no one else score there's Kevin Jackson for all.
Americans go at LSU before they dropped their program.
And then came the Iowa State and Iowa State's glad he did it.
He's now among a number of wrestlers on these two teams, veterans that were wrestlers for the two teams in the international program.
How did Tommy Ryan mix a 9 to 2 lead after his fourth takedown?
Tom Ryan will be very, very hard to beat by anybody in the nation if he has this kind of attitude and he puts that kind of offense on the mat every time he steps out there.
The escape makes it 9 to 3.
Go, go.
Go, go.
Reggie Jackson has not you guys.
I was about to say you hadn't been able to make much offense and the official thought that it was enough to just too little to prevent him from calling him for stalling.
And it's nine three after the warning, Ryan in on the legs switches to the double look.
Time left 15 seconds in the second period.
You know what was so nice about that takedown as Ryan knew where he was supposed he had to maneuver to get back into the center to be able to make the move.
He did.
And he got the two points.
11 to 3 in favor of the Hawkeye Ryan.
Real tough here against looks very strong against Carr Jackson.
I found way down right here he changes direction right He comes off the leg, comes around, throws the armbar in and secures the two points.
Little change in direction.
11 to 3.
Jackson starts underneath.
That's the way the takedowns have gone.
Steve Hamilton had the only takedown on a single leg in the second period against Terry Steiner at £150.
And which was the difference in that man.
One third stroke.
11 to 4.
Jackson is out now.
That's the first real really good offense.
It more of a Jackson has made it a high single on the edge of the mat but Ryan is stuffing his head up what the official Dave Frisch calls it a stalemate right now.
This is an important period for Corey Jackson also, because here we go again, Doug, we have a guy dominating, but we have a cyclone that could be right in there for all-American honors.
He's just you know, he's real high up there as far as.
And we aren't sure what way he'll be out either, because it doesn't.
Matter.
You know, it's right between.
Steve Hamilton and Torrie Jackson.
They both have real solid shots at high all-American finishes, regardless of what weight they're at.
But they probably will wrestle off this week if Hamilton is serious about staying out of 150.
And he did defeat Terry Steiner in his first match by one.
Here's Hamilton or Jackson in both single leg Nice double easy by Ryan.
Not much you can do there if you're Jackson.
And so Ryan's looking to how can I put this in the more back points but he gets him down there for this one.
He didn't stop there for a second.
And look over at Jimmy Zaleski said, This is what you want to do.
I kind of drew it on the board for him before he did it.
13 to 4 in favor of Ryan.
That'll be a good wrestle off between Jackson and and Hamilton.
Room behind that, Brooks Jackson.
13 to 5.
It's still a major decision for Ryan.
So this is an impressive showing by Tom Ryan because this is a solid wrestler in Tory Jackson.
He's beat some really good people once big matches for Iowa State Ryan doing a workman type workmanship type job right here on him.
Okay.
18 seconds to.
Go.
Go one.
2 minutes and 15 seconds of riding time.
Nate Ryan, 13 to 5 lead.
Ryan in Ryan stuff.
He's headed to him all around for another takedown.
So go 15 five.
Ryan's potential really tremendous.
Riding time 16 to 5.
That's a major decision and a happy dad.
There Frank Ryan and that makes it.
24 three in favor of the Hawkeyes over the cyclones.
After £178 Tom Ryan.
It's 32nd win of the year.
What's a happy dad look like right there?
You whistle, you clap.
This is better, boy.
Third lot right now let's go to 167 number three and run.
Mark Rylance of Iowa scored against Bobby Thompson of Iowa State Junior Thompson is our red, but he's beaten some tough people.
He's 25 and seven this year, the only senior day and that's it in the lineup for the I take that back Mike Kelly who weighed in at 177 is also a senior here is Ryan.
Hustling with that cake and he has Thompson is back Ryan is a big pin he can pin from anywhere and here he goes driving Thompson down a lot of time here.
Islands, it kind of.
Smells it through.
And so a five point move for Rylan.
I'm sure we'll get another look at that and you can see how it happened.
Three times five to nothing is the score before the time before.
Bloody nose stop this one.
Thompson does not get injury time for this.
Look at that right here.
That nice throw.
He's able to double over hook, get his hips in there and make the toss.
He knows what he did it with was his, so he was able to get his hips underneath.
Now it's looking awful tight, looking good.
But Thompson's able to squeeze through here and get his shoulders up off the mat, just barely right here.
Boy, It's close, isn't it, Doug?
It is.
That why Thompson did a good job of.
Yeah.
Of avoiding the pin that time The first half of this meet went this way.
If you just joined us.
Pretty tough match at 118.
Tougher than last time, Zapp.
It'll be naked, though, by coming on with takedowns late 8 to 3.
Then Terry Brand's pinned fourth ranked down night 550 at 126.
Tom Brandes had a forfeit.
No Iowa State there at 142.
Troy Steiner beat Shawn Rust out on a on a technical call without losing a point.
Then at 150, Steve Hamilton came down to 150 and beat Terry Steiner 43 a tough, controversial match 158 Tom Ryan, a major over Torrie Jackson who one 5826 to 5 and here we are at 167 Iowa State's manage to get 13 team points out of their individual so far all together against 66 for Iowa and Bobby Thompson has enough of a bloody nose here that he's not trying to do that he's decorated the match pretty well.
Absolutely.
I think championships are more dangerous.
You can see the Hawkeyes.
Okay.
We're going to give you a another look what and I'm sure this is a fun look for anybody who won.
Those are the NCAA ticket winners in the drawing we had at halftime.
Jeff Wise, winner of Fort Madison, Carl Konrad of Iowa City, and Mike Molly, a debut.
Congratulations, Will.
I wonder if they felt lucky and they're not going to purchase any now or wonder if we're going to see him out there with two in the air, two tickets in the air outside selling every session.
The tickets they've already bought don't know.
But they're going to have a lot fun because the NCAA championship will be right here in Iowa City, March 14th through 16th.
On the left.
Green on Bobby Thompson back in the Middle East.
You don't get lose injury time, time out for a bloody nose, because as we've often said, you know, it's pretty hard to fake blood, which is what the rule tries to prevent.
Working out rylan's wrestling right now, because I think Thompson's a real solid wrestler.
He wrestles a lot of big people, tough railing, the aggressor right now.
And if he can stay aggressive, it's going to go a long way in Iowa, chances to win a national championship.
And when I mean stay, I mean all 7 minutes.
And that's a key for Reilly.
That's Tim Johnson you just heard.
I'm Doug Brown.
We're on Iowa Public television's 15th anniversary season of college wrestling coverage today in Carver Hawkeye Arena for our final dual meet of the season, the rematch between the Cyclones and the Hawkeyes.
And it's been Iowa so far, 24 to 3 coming into this match at 167.
There's the first point for Bobby Thompson of Iowa State, Game five one.
Hey, no one really, really has a lot of talent.
I've said it before.
I think he's one of the more talented wrestlers on the team, if not the most talented he can throw from anywhere.
He can pin from anywhere.
He's got good high crotches.
Look at that snap.
He puts the head snap.
Spun around and it's 7 to 1.
He stays opened up.
There's maybe nobody in the country that can can stay with him.
And it has so much of an arsenal it.
Boy, I'll tell you, if you looked at Iowa only here in Carver Hawkeye this year and you wonder who in the world had any chance of beating him.
Look at this.
A little neat tap that didn't do much.
But he spun around to the other side for the two points.
Sets it up.
Well, no, Let's go.
Thompson.
We'll go back into the down position.
We have 50 seconds to go.
First period.
Bobbi's looking kind of damage there.
He came in at the end of the match with a with a bandage over his eye, and now he has a bloody nose.
There's the Thompson seven two.
Still very well.
There's the blood again.
And he's really he really does have us quite a bloody nose here and time is called again.
That's Dan Gable who has been the.
Well he was pretty tickled I think for most of last weekend and things have been going pretty well this year.
There's a sports spectacular coming up there on March 2nd that we've been covering for 20 years.
It's the high school wrestling turn of events and Tim Johnson, Dean Borg, Dick Trotter, now all be back in the action, the opening ceremonies, the awards, our 20th anniversary of high school wrestling on Iowa Public Television Saturday beginning at 630.
Don't miss it if you can.
Well, any high school wrestling fan or any wrestling fan, period, shouldn't miss that spectacle.
30 seconds to go in the first period.
It's been slow evolving here so far because Thompson's nose bleed.
And so we've had to stop several times.
Mark Rylance Thompson in on the way when he's out of bounds natural.
Well, the one thing about Thompson is he's a gamer.
He'll stay in there.
He'll fight you.
There's a difference in talent right here, Doug, between Mark Rylance and Bobby Thompson.
But you know, there's a lot of heart in Bobby Thompson.
He's a senior.
And you can bet that every match he's wrestling right now, he's saying, Hey, this probably the last match.
One of the last matches I'll wrestle.
And he gets in there and goes after it and goes.
That had a lot to do with him getting off his back.
Yeah, I think so.
722 is the score here at the end of the first period.
Rylan gets his choice and takes the position of disadvantage himself.
Right on.
But if you think you're good, it's a position of advantage because you get the point for escaping.
Roll by while he's out to eight to to escape six point lead for the Hawkeyes.
Get to go ahead.
At 177.
We don't know who will wrestle it might be Matt Johnson.
It might be Mike Kelly for Iowa state against Bart Charles Vick working outside.
I'm guessing it's going to be Johnson because.
Well, I'm not sure Kelly's warming up to a 8 to 2 here at 167 in favor of Rylan, the Hawkeye and Black.
Go.
Let's go.
So we saw Iowa beat Oklahoma State in a devastating manner last weekend.
Iowa State wrestles the Cowboys and you're water this year.
Oh great that will take place a week from today.
Well, that's always tough to wrestle at.
Gallagher Hall now Gallagher Iveagh Hall honor not only the great wrestling coach, but the great basketball coach, Oklahoma State.
That's a tough place to wrestle.
An Iowa state will have to be ready to go.
There's a warning there, and I think it was against Riley.
Go there.
Go.
I believe it was against Riley.
Go.
Oh.
Rylan has slowed his paced out here in the second period and is leading a two to most probably didn't want to get in that lock up upper body There we go.
It gets past That's the Iowa State bench.
Joe Gibbons in the center with Jimmy's brother, the head coach on the right, and Kevin Jackson on the left.
Right here.
This is where Marco Island to push himself.
He needs to really just say, I got to go here and I've got to be able to score here.
This is where this is the road to the national championship.
For me to be able to score at end of a second period really put it on in the third period.
It's important right now for Mike Rowland to show respect.
Well, he began the match with a five point move, felt.
And sometimes that makes you lazy afterwards.
And that's you know Mark Right.
And there's no need for him there in that case because he can hit it any and about right now, three or four weeks before the national the time to be in top physical shape.
And in the second period with an 8 to 2 lead for Ireland, he had the only point in that period 8 to 7.
Here's the attendance today at 11,109 fans in Carver Hawkeye Arena to watch Iowa and Iowa State lockup head to head.
For three days.
And Iowa leads 24 to 3 in one hour.
All but the £150 match so far.
Steve Hamilton beat Terry Steiner there, four, two, three, dropping away from where he had been before.
Now, three.
Injury time out again for Thompson.
And I think it was a knee.
Yeah he's had a he had a knee rebuild you know we've mentioned that earlier in the year and that's that's the one that he had to work back on over a period of a year or more.
That time he's ready to go.
Come down.
Mark Riley, Junior Eagle World High School flop.
So great coming back after a rebuilt knee also tells you something about Bobby Thompson.
I know the Ames, Iowa local product for the Cyclones.
Talking about the state which will broadcast in two weeks.
Bobby Thompson was a state champion undefeated senior year.
Mark Rowland won two state title 823.
Now Thompson has three escapes.
Here in good.
Boy.
Here we come back to the center again, stupid.
Over referee Dave Parrish, Colorado Springs and had a big first period and they have been one one ever since.
Drew Griffin.
And back to the center with a minute and three to.
Go Lynch gets.
Arkansas.
Walk lay back lay back Hitler no good.
Thompson has managed to block Raylan of there pretty well ever since the first period.
Not much going on now go.
And you wonder what I'm sure going through Thompson's the coach's mind You wonder what happened if that big move hadn't happened so early.
I tend to think Rylan always has that big move somewhere in a match like Drew.
8 to 3, Rylan with 35 seconds to go.
Thompson had to give up a great cross line.
And there's a point for Thompson.
Gordon for good.
Sometimes you got to be back in the corner to get going.
There.
Pretty good.
Whizzer hit block by driller by Thompson holding the position, but Rylan now manages to take him down right at the very edge first takedown since about the middle of the second period.
First period, 10 to 4.
Jump up is one point away from a major decision.
Mark Rylan is with Writing Time.
Make it 11 for.
6 seconds to go.
Tanner For.
The rainout, like the basketball team found out last night, anything can happen in 6 seconds.
And oh, boy, I'll tell you, you're you're all back.
Yeah, you know what you're talking about, Tim?
Because did he give them the reverse.
Yes, he gave the reverse, but he didn't get him back.
But and so the reverse made up 10 to 16 right in time.
Made it 11 to 6.
You're right.
You get into a situation like that, you don't lose your concentrate.
Now, you got to take it all the way to the buzzer.
Anybody that lacks up the other guy, maybe they wanted more.
Get your point.
Go right there.
Rylan had enough of a cushion right there to beat up through.
But that can change the government there.
The Big Ten for the national number.
27 to 3, Rylan takes his Iowa Hawkeyes up over Iowa State by 24, not one on 77.
And Mike Kelly comes out to wrestle for Iowa State, a senior from Bret.
He has a brother on the Iowa team against.
Barcelos big junior from webster city.
Matt johnson will not wrestle at 177 tonight.
He's had a little bit of an ankle problem.
That may be part of the reason that he was held out and johnson is ranked fourth.
Charles big is unranked at the moment.
That may have been another reason.
Why I think his ankle was sore.
They don't want to take any chances before.
The big eight tournament, we keep talking about the NCAA, but we also have to remind ourselves and our viewers that the Big Eight and the Big Ten's are between the Nationals and those teams.
They have to qualify.
They have to finish really high.
And go, Well, let's set up the last three weights for Iowa, because it's your impression that's been mine that these upper weights were.
Dan Gable has been putting a lot of his thought in the last few weeks.
He figures that if he can get these guys on the track all the way to their top of their ability, then Iowa will be tough to beat.
Try almost all of this time on those last three.
And any time Dan Gable puts that much time, a weight class or two, they're going to improve.
And they knew he found out where he needed to spend his time, get to where he spent it.
I think we've see that in Bartlesville.
Well, certainly advisor, certainly advisor also as he got to be the number one ranked man last week from Arizona State, Charles Vick against Mike Kelley at £177.
Mike Kelly, a senior from Brett Fine wrestling family.
And getting getting.
Mike Kelly got his he got a big win last week wrestling at 177 against Oklahoma.
He was filling in for Mat Johnson and he got a pin that.
Didn't make it work like get him off your head.
Got the cyclones out and really rolling.
Hey, hey.
Hey.
Gordon Tucker, Bart.
Charles Vick got 177 for Iowa, right?
He was he was rated highly earlier in the year, went into a slump in mid season.
He's not rated now.
I don't believe it.
Well, he.
Is out there.
He's he's coming on.
Like I said, he was third elimination last year.
He's very talented, but he just needs to get himself going both mentally and physically.
And I think he's on his way.
All right.
Now, how about red?
Let's go Red, yellow, red.
You need some more offense.
He's got a warning.
Let's go back to the center.
Okay.
Hey, let's go over to the Japanese.
Great.
They make it go back.
Warning against Kelly.
What you got to make with him is his first time pass over.
He gets the call at no point.
Second time it is.
Here's Charles speaking on the leg and he has Kelly on his back.
Three started out as a double ended up with an outside single and he was able to catch Mike Kelly on his back for three a big five point move Kelly did are Charles big did a nice job of keeping that Kelly his back because he had to really tighten up there right in a split second to keep him there so it's a nice five point move not necessarily an automatic five point.
Move but he's here.
And in the first period and Charles Vick, here's how he did.
It right here.
Now he doubling down Now watch right here.
He's able to pull inside.
You can't see it well from this angle.
But Kelly, really like he would have been able to get out of that to come up with just two against him and Charles Big.
See how he has that arm tight right there.
That was the key.
And so just like that, it's five to nothing in favor of Charles Vick.
Through the first 3 minutes, Kelly had his choice, took the down position late to try to score.
But Charles Vick's putting a lot of weight on him right.
And that's true what Coach Briggs was talking about the other night when he was our guest commentator.
You can make yourself heavier than you really are.
And that's what you're doing right now because of that hip action.
He's making himself heavy.
And that really wears on you when you're on the bottom.
Yeah, and he lost control.
Well, Fred, good roll.
One day of fresh says it's even up to he gave the escape to Kelly on that possession.
Let's look.
At it.
He's not on top.
He's got his body off him right here in the roll by.
Kelly was able to bring him around, but did Charles Vick ever lose control?
That's the question.
The referee finished as he did.
They're up one point for Kelly.
Again, five one.
Charles, very good work.
And that's it.
Back up for him now.
Stroke going out of bounds.
We have less than a minute to go in the second period.
Re.
Iowa Public television 15th anniversary season as well as last week wasn't it we started.
Think it seems like as you sit here going is this our last one or does it work eight or nine you know and it's been an incredible year already and a short one.
And we'll find out who the stars of tomorrow are when we cover the Iowa High School meet.
Very good attack in Des Moines two weeks from today, two weeks from.
Yesterday, where again what can going.
On?
The out of bounds line 5 to 1.
Charles Vick of Iowa with a five point has taken the lead over Mike Kelly wrestling at 177 tonight for Iowa State at 190 it'll be Travis visor against Dan Troop troop is rated 11th.
He beat Pfizer and Ames by one point.
They're both called for stalling this time.
And that's a penalty for that's a penalty point for Kelly.
Hard for Charles big.
Win.
Because Kelly had been called Before.
You go, guy.
27 to 3 now Iowa over Iowa State right on down three, down, started to say about damn troops had the success against Pfizer and health.
But Pfizer had a big weekend last week and.
He certainly did time number two man from Oklahoma State and defeating the number one man in the nation from Arizona State.
Now let's watch.
We're going to watch Kelly Keep the leg in here.
And Charles, big try to come out.
And Charles, big dispersal.
Kelly tried.
Calvin came out.
Get to work.
Go, go.
Charles Vick started the third period down now leads 8 to 1 by down I mean in the other position right back.
What did it go?
Kelly made an unsuccessful switch.
Look, you wait.
For him, tell the him go.
Great.
You're right.
There's a warning.
There's A point against Chelsea for Kelly.
You heard de first say here.
Here's a reversal right here.
Chelsea is able to get the whizzer in.
Then stuff the head and come around for the two points.
You also heard, Chris, like you were saying, going to say you're writing.
And that's not the point in wrestling is to ride, it's to pen and you and there's that's the decision the referee makes, whether or not you're writing or not or going for that ball.
Well.
There is a warning the other way.
Kelly was in a position to get out and he didn't.
Move.
And a fresh pin one on him.
Now, that's the second penalty point against Kelly and that's time.
It's 2.9 to 2 now in favor of Charles Vick.
Get the work, move back.
Look.
Chelsea has the single leg.
Nice limp arm for the 2.12.
I see a determined chills right here.
And he's continuing to show his strength with only 38 seconds left with an 11 to 4 lead, a hard fought match by Charles Vick.
Go over 30 seconds.
Charles Big has riding time.
It is a major decision.
If the score doesn't change in the next 25 seconds.
Don't know.
We need shots, guys.
This is real important for both teams right here.
Just from an individual standpoint, you don't want the Iowa doesn't want to give up that extra point.
This from a pride standpoint, go.
Charles Big needs to get that.
No, he doesn't.
He's got to he's got it.
He doesn't need a but Dan Gable said I want to get that takedown right there.
Got it.
There it is.
And he drove it.
Oh, good.
He put Kelly on his back.
Doesn't have time to pin him to 02.0.
But with the writing time and the two point near-fall, it makes it 18 to 4.
Oh, well, I'm not sure.
I don't know how it makes it 18 to 4.
It was 11 of more than I have heard of a seven point move.
16 to 4 or whatever it is.
It's a major decision.
We'll figure it out.
College wrestling will continue on your state wide sports Iowa public Television after we pause for station ID.
And 100 miles.
Hey, freshman dance alumni, Junior Travis.
Right now we go to £190 Iowa against Iowa State.
Travis Fischer, who drilled a home fans and carved Hawkeye last week with a draw against the number two ranked 90 pounder.
And I win against number one in two exciting matches.
Dan Troup beat Pfizer at Hilton is ranked 11th.
He's a freshman from Kalispell, Montana.
Troup is going to be a good 190 pounder.
He's had a successful year for our freshman campaign.
He's big and physical, but he's young.
VISER Getting out of the junior college ranks, never an all-American, never a state champion.
The like you said, he turned it on last week and he has a lot of potential.
Troup had a nice low single here.
Come on now.
But whether he can turn it into points is another matter.
But now he has the other leg and a high point high position right on the edge.
Oh boy.
Need for no need to pull him in is what he needs to do.
Know where he's at and pull him in and then execute.
Don't execute it on the edge.
Cutting leg sweep lost the move and.
Coach Gibbons Gibbons is that's what he was saying you if you have that opportunity drag him into the middle and then execute under.
Shot were a minute and a few seconds into the £190 match Let's.
Go to circuit breaker he begins at youth that we're talking about inexperience sometimes not not you know having that mat savvy and that'll come with experience.
I've never found anything that could replace experience yet Get the.
Word get the word talent.
Sometimes I'll do it.
Well, not when it really comes down to the.
There.
Even if they're even.
If, you know, the experience is something that has to happen over a long period of time.
Go through.
You got your head.
Go great.
Right?
You got your head.
The warning against Pfizer for blocking off with a head coach, right.
Stay fresh.
Colorado Springs, Colorado, is the referee dance partner.
I get it.
I go get your bike.
Double underhook there from Troop.
Now, Pfizer wrestled tough matches in his encounters with the two top ranked people last week and then came on at the end to draw one win the other.
On the course.
Pfizer and go back to the center again.
Kenny shot Van Gable doesn't leave.
He's not subtle about it.
He lets you know that he wants his man to go out there.
Go Go, go get Adam.
Neither of these people, as you notice, are on the head grave.
And there is a penalty going.
Off the streets, paralyzed your heads down your back and.
All right.
Their troop made the shot.
Pfizer ended up on the edge of the mat, got hit for stalling.
Referee Dave Frisch says that's one point for Iowa State.
And see, this is where you got to be in the kind of shape to know where you're at.
Troup needs to continue to make those shots and to put Pfizer up against the ropes.
And on the other hand, five needs to do what he was doing last week.
He's got a lot of potential.
He needs to open up the.
Now Pfizer gets his choice, wants to go down.
Red take.
Hip hop him is.
Hey Pfizer got up quick Hurry one one.
Red.
You know, Pfizer needs to drop his level and make the attack.
Last week we saw a guy duck under.
He needs to just get on there and penetrate, dropping his level and then and then make that shot.
And he needs to commit himself.
Pfizer with the Underhook.
He has the inside position here.
Now, it will go, No, no, no.
I said.
Troop got it back through.
Tape on group.
Feet.
He's just going forward.
Oh, let me get.
Back to the center.
Hey, got to go.
One, two, one.
Here.
Troop got a point.
Pfizer was hit with a stalling call in the first period after earlier warning.
And Pfizer escaped the start.
The second period.
Lay down right here.
Pfizer doesn't make a shot right now and then, especially if troop is able to push him up against the edge, Pfizer's going to get called again.
What is that?
There was a little move by Pfizer and that block kept the wolf in the door.
I think guys got to get to both.
Men got to shoot.
Let's go.
Hey, got get a shot.
Yeah.
One, two, one.
You tomorrow.
Let's go.
This is where Troop needs to make the referee committed himself, for one, because he's got him thinking that way right there.
Another shot at the edge.
Yeah.
There it is.
There's a warning.
Not a warning, but a penalty, again, against Pfizer.
So we'll see.
And the thing is, Pfizer doesn't have to be in this position.
All he needs to do is produce his own offense and he's not.
We've motion him here.
Look, get out.
Got him elbows in.
Go paddle.
We have 15 seconds to go.
In the second period of £190 in a meet that has seen the Hawkeyes lead the Cyclones 31 to 3.
And here at 192 to wash when you go in favor of troop, both penalty points.
So troop will get the start in his choice here.
Now let's get the feeling that Royce Alger must wrestle a lot of Pfizer in the room because he's out there with them, gave.
Yeah, that happens.
You know, you see the different wrestlers that wrestle in that room with these wrestlers on the seat next to Dan Gable when they come up because they know they know what these wrestlers are thinking.
They're part of their side right there.
All right.
Pfizer starts on top against Troup, who is a freshman from the high country out from Kalispell, Montana, yesterday, Troop is out and takes a two point lead.
Now, the third period.
Last week was Pfizer's period and he needs a big change here against Dan Troop.
Oh, with a score of 3 to 1 favor.
Of the cyclo.
Let's go again.
Troopers struggling for the inside position, but now Pfizer is working hard against him out about now.
No score.
Oh, no.
You've been warned.
No, I thought that the rematch was supposed to go on.
Do they stop the match?
I mean.
I don't know.
I think he said he just warned.
I know.
But as far as it it was close to being a takedown for troop and they called it out of bounds.
So it wasn't good in there.
So.
You know, we're 3 to 1 score here.
It's anybody's match.
And we troop of Iowa State leads by two with a minute left.
You get the feeling it doesn't matter whether you're number one ranked number 11 rank or whatever Pfizer's going to be in there close and have close matches with whoever it is.
Iowa State bench calling on Troop two to hit one.
They said hit one because otherwise you'll get called going back to the center.
We have less than 30 seconds to go through Travis Viser from Marengo.
But it was last last week.
Riser did get a nice little duck under right here, and that's what won it for him.
But now here's Trump with the inside position.
Again, 16 seconds to go.
Wow.
Pfizer can't get the setup he wants.
Trump manages to stay inside the referee every day.
Official let him have it without calling it four star.
And you can go right to the end of the match here.
And he did 3 to 1 in favor of Damn true.
For the second time this year, he wins at £190 against Iowa's Travis fighting back.
Damn true.
Like I said, he's a good freshman.
Doug is only going to get better with experience now.
31 to 6.
Now we got a heavyweight.
Marciano's to guard from Iowa will wrestle Jamey Cutler, Todd Kenney, also weighed in, but Jamie Cutler was 11 and four and has done quite well this year.
Junior from West Des Moines Dowling John Austin Guard locks up right away with a bear hug across the back and he couldn't come early.
He's back Oh, listen to the crowd.
They're on their feet.
And a boy squared up another 5.000.
We talked about right here, Cutler said.
Well, do I go with it?
He went with it.
He flew us north.
My Worry was you get a nice job of getting the points on the edge of the mat before they went out of bounds.
Iowa's had eight near Falls.
He's got to be in this meet so far.
And.
One pin that was at £126 where defending national champion Terry Branstad pinned last year's third place man Dan Knight in 5 minutes and 50 seconds.
Did Austin Garp looks like the big O of last year I mean yeah.
Against Jamie Cutler.
He's ahead five to nothing and now he.
Can't go No.
Nearly had Cutler in a near position again.
One go five nothing to go do in the game get.
Austin Darby on top against Cutler you said Todd Kenny also weighed in for the sake.
Of our guys let's go.
He's ranked seventh He did not wrestle.
Oh, oh, oh.
Did you get your hat.
Iowa?
Come on to my side.
One set of matches I won at the opening meet, but Hylton then lost the last three.
They've won back to all but one so far here and also under wraps, leading five to nothing over Cutler.
I fight one more time.
I love them.
Go look.
Don't get out.
I'll just say.
This.
I was going to say this.
A type of open door for the type of wrestling that they want to see Austin North do aggressive, solid, but not overly aggressive to where he makes mistakes.
You know.
15th anniversary of college wrestling and the last match of the season.
It's good.
It's heavyweight between Iowa and Iowa State and Carter Arena in Iowa City.
John Austin North leads the cyclones.
Jamie Cutler five to nothing on a big move in the first period and in the last 30 seconds of the first period.
Watch the leg and it.
Turns Cutler over.
How many times do you see that move by a heavy job?
Cutler Isn't that bad.
Spot 16 seconds to go they both in north getting chest to chest he looks like he might have it You go oh to 2 minutes 53 seconds right here.
Iowa 37.
Iowa State six after that final pin by John Austin, Norfolk, Jay Cutler at heavyweight in 2 minutes and 53 seconds, the rematch between the Cyclones and the Hawkeyes.
When asked it the first quarter to the Hawkeyes here in Hilton Coliseum, now that our 15th anniversary wrestling season 1416.
Thank you got to do.
Big crowd 11,109 I think was the total here at Carver Hawkeye on a nice Sunday afternoon late Sunday afternoon between these two teams and now they get ready for the Nationals although Iowa State now has a big dual meet with Iowa's or with Oklahoma State yet to come, that won't be an easy one down at Stillwater.
And then they all get together with their colleagues in the big conference game.
I still think there's a lot to prove.
Iowa State still one of the best teams in the nation.
And I think what we see is that there's a really a best dual meet team in the nation.
That's Iowa Hawkeyes.
But when it comes to the NCAA, is Iowa, an Iowa state.
Both have their conference tournaments ahead of them.
And that's big and interesting.
Things happen.
As you know, when in the middle of dominating seasons, when we said we talked about it last week, Oklahoma State got driven out of this place a couple of years ago and then went on to win the national tournament.
The tournaments are different in order to get some other people involved, other people.
And it comes down to how many people can you get in there scoring, you know, and it comes down to a numbers game.
Into the final.
Well, there was one of the Iowa State winners that was Dan True.
We want to say some thank you is, by the way, two people for helping us out through the season.
From Iowa State University athletic director Max Jurich and Assistant athletic director Dave Cox, Wrestling side time for Shell.
Don't Coliseum technical director Randy Baumeister and Jim Gibbons and his coaching staff at Iowa State.
Here at the University of Iowa.
Athletic Director Bob Elliott, Assistant Larry Motor Director of Promotions.
Rick Clapp, the wrestling sports information director, is Bill Hadi, the women's sports information director who helped out for the women's basketball.
That's Weber.
Dell Kirk is the facilities manager here, and his assistant, Kelly Gray, Dan Gable, the wrestling coach, his staff, and Vivian Stringer, the basketball coach in the staff for today.
The Iowa women beat Indiana 86 to 55 here earlier this afternoon on Iowa Public television.
Matthew and I, Bob Balls be as the athletic director.
Thanks to you, Bob.
Nancy, Justice as the sports information director and Kevin Kane, the wrestling aside, Jim Begley is the manager of the uniform, Dave Kors, assistant manager, Don Briggs, who was with us as always as the three of the major coaches in the state, were wrestling coaches and staff Eldon Miller, basketball coaching staff, and at Drake University, linking the new athletic director to whom we wish good luck.
Bob McKenzie, associate athletic director, wrestling coach Lonny Timmerman, and basketball coach Rudy Washington and his staff.
And we want everybody to take a look at Steve Hamilton, who was a winner at £150 here tonight.
We also want to say congratulations to you are the three winners of our NCAA draw.
We had many, many, many entries, more than 2500 that came down to the three final winners.
Those are the folks who are going to get a phone call from our staff at Iowa Public Television with the official good news that they have tickets to the March 14th through 16th, the NCAA championship tournament.
Well, T.J., we had a good season again and we saw, at least in the dual meet season one dominant team.
Oh, I really believe the Hawkeyes had one of the best seasons they've ever had.
When you when you talk about up and down the lineup.
And it should be pretty exciting, though, for both teams, Iowa State, Iowa and northern Iowa when they head into the NCAA.
If you've been around the sport very long, you know that strange things happen tournaments that you don't think you're going to see on the basis of a dual meet season.
Oklahoma State is going to be back.
There's no doubt about that.
They're going to be tough.
We hope you enjoyed our season 15th anniversary.
I'll be looking for you, T.J., two weeks from today when we watch the high schools.
And that's on Saturday, March 2nd for Iowa Public television's 20th anniversary of the wrestling championships will be on the air at 630.
Live from Des Moines.
That'll be three Team 39 individual champions Saturday, the second at 630 Pop.
You'll watch if you're not there.
Now, stay tuned for our Sunday lineup next, including Nature Masterpiece Theater, followed by May to December.
Then three up and two down.
